Chapter three

 Couple of days earlier.

It was an early summer morning. Sky was clear blue with only few clouds drifting across it, but none of them big enough to shield the newly risen sun.
‘Looks like this will be a nice day’ thought Jaejoong coming out of his house still barefooted. A little, pleasant chill run down his spine when he stepped on the grass covered in dew.
He liked to get up early to start working. His step father had told him previous day something about big plans, thus: much work.
Stretching one last time Jaejoong got his shoes and went to storage to get the mower. That was his task for this morning. He was told there will be gathering happening so he had to mow down the grass of their courtyard. This gathering is like yearly custom of his family. His father usually invited his brother and friends with their families to enjoy some days away from work and daily routine. It was usually really fun, atmosphere was always good, especially when the adults start joking after few glasses of Soju.

He wasn’t done with half of the grassland when Sounghyeon come out of the house.
“Good morning Jaejoong. I see you’re up early again.” The older men greeted with a smile.
“Good morning. Yeah, I decided to start early, it sounded like we will have a lot to do today. “
Just as he was done saying that an angry Jessica opened a window to her room and shouted: “Can you turn that thing off?! I can’t sleep, god damn it!”
“Watch your language young lady!” warned their father. Jessica just mumbled something and closed her window again.
Jaejoong just realized, that it could be true; the mower was pretty loud for early morning so he apologized for waking everyone up. Seunghyeon just shook his head and told him to not mind a grumpy Jessica and continued their conversation.

“Is there a reason behind the extra preparations this year?” asked Jaejoong.
“Yes, my friend will come with his family. They were living abroad for about six years. Oh, maybe you remember, their last time here was the year when you came to live with us.”
Jaejoong thought for a moment and the nodded.
“You remember them, right? They had their son with them too, Changmin. How old was he then; eleven, twelve? He probably grew up so much that I won’t recognize him.”

‘I wonder how he grew up too; he looked like a really shy and polite kid.’ Thought Jaejoong.

He couldn't remember clearly, but he recalled how they looked and how they were rich but not in the least arrogant. At that time he was still getting used to idea having a family and it actually scared him to meet so many strangers at the same time. He also remembered how his parents tried him to go play together with the son of that family, but both of them were too shy then and stayed by the sides of their parents.

Both Jaejoong and Father were working in the yard when they heard a car drive in. They immediately recognized it and went to meet the driver.
His father greeted Yunho with a quick hug: “Hey, son! How are you? You’re early.”
“Hey, dad! Yeah, coach allowed us to go early so I decided to come and help with preparations.” Yunho explained opening trunk of the car and taking his things out.
“That’s good, spare hands will come in handy while putting up the tent.” Father told laughing and took some bags to bring them inside. “Your mother will be ecstatic when she hears you're here.”
Yunho chuckled closing his car. His grin broadened when he saw Jaejoong standing a bit further away.
                    “Hey, pretty Jae!!” he shouted.
“Oh, the dreadful moment of your arrival is already here! Why, oh Why?” Jaejoong joked acting like he was about to faint.
“Aww, I missed you too, little bro!”
Jae just rolled his eyes despite the smile making its way on his lips.
“Why are you so happy, by the way?” Jaejoong asked taking some of the bags. ‘Just how long is he going to stay?’ he thought to himself.
“What? When I have not been happy? You know you love my beautiful smile!”
“Oh, Yunho, dear, I’ll have to disappoint you, no matter how nice you think your smile is, I still believe that all that testosterone has eaten up your brain. And now answer my question, will you?”
“Ow, Jae, you hurt my feelings.” Yunho answered with overdone fake sob.
                    “Yunho-hyung.”
“Ok, ok. Geez, don’t get your panties in a bunch.”
                     “…”
“I met someone, we had our third date yesterday.”
“Oh! No wonder, you're walking around with a grin like that. So, who is it?” Jaejoong answered with a smile.
“Her brother is my team mate, she came to watch our game last week and we were introduced at the afterparty.”
“That’s nice. I’m happy for you.”
“Oh thank you, that’s so sweet of you!” Yunho answered laughing and taking shorter guy into a headlock.
“Yah! You brainless giant, Stop it now!” Jaejoong dropped his brother’s bags on the ground and tried to get free.
Right at that moment Yeon-hong came out of the house to call for her sons: “Morning Jaejoongie! And Yunnie, dear, how are you? You can play later, now bring those bags inside!”
“Ok, mom! Just a moment!” Yunho answered still not letting Jae go.
“Ok, just don’t take too long you two.” Their mother told them, before going back into the house shaking her head with a smile.
“Promise to not tell anyone yet and I’ll let you go without any harm. Is it a deal?” Yunho asked in mock threat.
As younger man promised to keep it secret, Yunho let Jaejoong go.
They both picket up the rest of the bags and went towards the house.
“So you're going to tell parents about her?”
“Not yet at least. Hey, you know what? We haven’t talked for a long time, so why don’t we meet later at your place? I’ll bring some snacks or something, ok?”
“I don’t know what more I have to do today, I have to finish mowing the yard and I think dad said something about bringing out tables and chairs from storage?”
“Probably, the event is already this weekend.”
“So soon? That’s like in…two days?”
“Yeah. I will help you with that stuff and then we can meet. Now let’s bring these bags in.”

Although Yunho liked to tease Jaejoong, he was an epitome of a real big brother image; they could joke around, they could talk, they could fight and talk again after that. Yunho is one of few people who Jaejoong could share his private thoughts and troubles with, as well as listen to what Yunho had to tell about his life experience. That is one more thing he loved about his family: having someone you can always trust.

* * *
Jaejoong left the house early to start with getting stuff out of storage place. After a while Yunho came to help.
‘                 Your big bro’s here to help you reach the highest shelves.’
                  ‘I am not that short!’
                  “That’s what you think, shorty.’

* * *
“Father asked me to tell you something, by the way.” Yunho said lifting folding chairs from highest shelves and passing them to Jaejoong.
Jaejoong had to cough from dust falling right on him before answering:”Yeah? What is it?”
Yunho chuckled. “The thing is, there will be more guests than usually, so we don’t have enough place for them to stay. Uncle, aunty and their kids will be staying in the biggest quest room, one more couple and their boy will stay in another one, Changmin will stay with me and that leaves Jessica’s room for Dad’s friend and his wife to stay, so…” he trailed off looking at emotions changing rapidly in Jaejoong’s face.
“Please, don’t tell me…” Jaejoong almost pleaded.
                       ‘I hope that doesn’t mean that …’
“Jessica will have to stay at your place.” Yunho broke his train of thoughts.
                       ‘…yeah, that.’
“Sorry man, I know she is bitchy, but it won’t be for long, only until uncle and his family leaves. We couldn’t figure out any other way, mom said it would be weird for boys to sleep in a girl’s room or other way around.”
Jae snorted at the first part. “But I am a guy too. What the…?”
“Well you’re her step-brother. Besides you’ll have to deal with it for a couple of days...or a week.”
“Ok whatever. Guess I’ll have to hide my every possession. She’ll probably try to find something to blackmail me with.”
Yunho just laughed and climbed off the ladder.

* * *

It was already pretty late in afternoon when they were done putting the chairs and tables under the tent at the side of the yard. After family men finished putting up the party tent, they stocked everything inside. Father decided to set them up tomorrow and let the boys rest for tonight.

Stretching his arms, Jaejoong stopped to look at the sky for a moment. How he enjoyed looking at the colorful evening sky. He loved how the setting sun looked behind the old mill across the pond, how the rivulet played with colors and made water look warm and inviting. He loved the peace he felt here. After living through hell, everyone liked to call high-school, this calm place was a paradise. Jaejoong remembered how he told Yunho about this and got called a SAP; however, few days later Yunho sat beside him in grass, of course not without a mock threat of not letting Jaejoong live in peace if he told anyone about this.

He was woken from his thoughts by the same person saying: “If you‘ll continue like this, I won’t be surprised if I see you crying while reading romantic poetry!”
“Shut up, hyung. Let’s go inside.” Jaejoong laughed putting arm around taller man’s shoulders:
"As far as I remember, you were the one being a sentimental soul yearning for a long, heartfelt talk with its little brother, no?”                  Added Jaejoong letting go and walking home.
“Yah, you brat, I never said that!” Yunho said.
“Come here you little…” Yunho yelled, running after his laughing brother.
