Light at the end of tunnel and politics

Now that I have handed in my last assignment for the term, I have 5 weeks left of classes.  1 Quiz, 1 practical final, and speak to my instructors about my term paper.  That's it.  I for one am glad the hard stuff is out of the way.  Finals week won't be a stressor and once the last massage has been given, it'll be a 7 day gap between the first day of vacationing in Puerto Rico.

So now I will have more time to write what's going on in my head since, I think I've come to value the art of writing what's on my mind.

So now onto politics.

I am cautiously optomistic that Obama can make a positive impact on the country overall.  With that said.....

I think this Donnesbury comic in 2000 kinda sets the tone.

I'm not saying I'm turning Republican or anything of the sort, but I think after each general election, I seem to really take a look at the issues and do a reevaluation of what I believe in.  Probably because I come across more information about a subject that I didn't have 4 years ago.

Now I didn't really pay attention to any sort of politics until sometime in high school.  One day I was home flipping channels and Rush Limbaugh was on.  I was a political fawn, just starting to stabilize my legs.  When my mom came in and saw that I was watching that, she made me turn it away and told me that I shouldn't take what he said seriously.  Looking back, I can see how these shock-political-pundits are really good at their job.  An impressionable me could have easily been by his talking down about someone else and cracking jokes about their intelligence level.

And maybe because I'm naturally a laid back person, generally non-violent, and sees-the-good-in-everbody that the Democratic Party was one that I have always associated with.  As each election has come and gone, I tend to look what matches the topics I care about.  My picks for the general election over the years basically went party line, although I think I voted for Nader 4 years ago, I don't recall.  And that's part of the problem.  The electoral college robs me of my real vote.  Last election was a prime example with Kerry getting more popular votes than Bush (or was that Gore vs. Bush when this happened, I forget), but this one also can be looked it.  The popular vote as it stands right now is 53% to 46%, which is quite a close race.  The electoral votes are 68% - 32%.  I think with modern technology, the Electoral College is an antequated system of deciding a presidency.

Now I'm into the 4th decade of my life and I would think by this point I know what my values/principles are.  Somehow I think I piecemailed them over the course of my life and therefore I feel I am inconsistent on some issues.  Which is why I think with my views I end up being a liberaltarianocialist.  And clearly some of the portions of that word are quite contradictory.

So who am I?  What do I believe in?

Let's find out.....
