“I cheated.”
Those words were still playing in Alex's head, even hours later. He could still see George, hair clinging to his face from the rain, eyes nervous and scared. All he could ask himself was why? Wasn't it supposed to be him that screwed up? It always was. He screwed up with Izzie, he screwed up taking care of his mom. But when he'd gotten together with George, he'd begun trying, really trying. He hadn't cheated, he hadn't let himself get jealous when someone made a pass, he'd kept his temper in check. The last time they'd fought was when George wanted to come out, but he wasn't ready.
So why was it him sitting on the bed, feeling like someone had just ripped his heart out?
“Who?”
Who. He'd needed to know. He'd needed to know who it was. Now he wished he didn't.
“Izzie.”
His breath had left him then, stuck half way in his throat, muscles working to move it until all that came out was a choked breath. He wouldn't cry. Not here. Not now. When he was alone, music playing and water beating down from a shower head, he would. But not now.
It was karma. It had to be. He'd cheated on Izzie and now George...
“We were drunk.”
He said it like that would make it better. He'd told George, told him that Izzie wasn't happy about them, said she wanted George, but he hadn't believed him. George had laughed, asked him why a blonde, stacked supermodel would go for him. He'd asked George what he was. You're a guy. It's different.
He should have seen it coming.
And then, looking at George, trying not to let him see how hard it was, he'd asked the question. Making himself say it had brought tears to his eyes, and he'd had to duck his head as he asked. He wasn't going to let George see the tears and he couldn't bring himself to look at George's face when the words left his mouth.
“Do you love her?”
