Author's Notes: Just a short little... thing. I happened to watch a bunch of SG-1 today, including Serpent's Song and Rules of Engagement. I love the little look between Sam and Janet while they watch the video in "RoE," so I thought I'd write a little Sam/Janet thing for the aftermath of Serpent's Song. SUCH a great Janet episode, BTW. Wish she'd gotten more screen time, but I don't see how they could've done it. So this is making up for not seeing it on TV.
Summary: Janet sees a side of her friends and teammates that she doesn't particularly like. Missing scene from "Serpent's Song."

Sam knocked on the doorframe of Janet's office. The door was open, but Janet's back was to her and the doctor's posture didn't imply 'come on in.' She was writing in a file, her hand pressed against her forehead as she flipped the sheet over. "What?" she said tersely.

"The way you stormed out of the Gate room," Sam said. "I was... I wanted to make sure you were okay."

"I'm fine."

"Did you pick that up from Cassie?"

Janet sighed and closed the file. She turned the chair around and looked up at Sam. "Do you have any idea what the past couple of days have been like for me, Sam? I was responsible..." She looked past Sam's shoulder and said, "Close the door."

Sam stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

"I was responsible for someone who has actually killed you in the past. I had Colonel O'Neill all but loading a gun next to Apophis' bedside. I had Teal'c... to be frank? I was scared to be around Teal'c." She stood up and began to pace. "I felt like the bad guy, trying to save his life. Trying to take away his suffering. And the worst part is, everyone is acting like I wanted him around. Who he was, what he'd done, didn't matter to me. He was my patient. I couldn't... I-I would never..."

"I know," Sam whispered.

Janet leaned against the desk and looked up at Sam. "I felt like I didn't know anyone on this base. I felt like an outsider. Even worse, I felt like I was taking his side. He was my patient first, everything else came second. General Hammond ordering me to stop medical treatment? I... I can't even... In my eyes, a life is a life, Sam. No one, no one on this base - not even you - seemed to understand that." She sighed heavily and laced her fingers behind her neck.

"Are you done?" Sam asked.

"Yes."

"What do you need?"

Janet closed her eyes and held out her hands. Sam stepped forward into Janet's embrace, resting the doctor's head on her shoulder. Janet laced her fingers in the small of Sam's back and closed her eyes, the smooth material of Sam's shirt against her cheek a comfort.

"Thank you," Janet whispered.

Sam smoothed Janet's hair and said, "How long do you want me to stay?"

"Forever."

Sam smiled. "I think I'd cramp up before then," she said. "How about we try for fifteen minutes and go from there?"

Janet smiled against Sam's shoulder. "Deal."
