The Substitute's Lament
While looking for something else, I found this: An Embarrassment: One Year as a Substitute Teacher by boomerpetway. Well written look at the sometimes sad state of modern American education from the other side of the desk. If you are a teacher (sororani you still in here?), or the owner/operator of a high-school student, it's worthwhile reading. If, OTOH, you are a high-school student, what are you doing here? I'm well over 30 - you shouldn't be listening to me. Then again, since you have no idea who Abbie Hoffman was, much less Jack Weinberg, you probably didn't realize that either. Well, just trust me on that one. ;-)
The assembly itself was an embarrassment. It was unnecessary, hurtful, and ultimately boring. But more troubling than those two and a half hours are the greater problems that the assembly symbolizes: time killing as substitute for education and students who don’t know how to handle themselves properly.
