I went home for Passover for the first time in 4 years over the weekend. I was glad to have the chance and me and my mom had a fun time making delicacies like matzah lasagna (matzlagna?) Aging adds a whole new dimension to family units. It probably seemed perfect to you because in a way it *was* perfect when you were younger - no one was so old they were losing their mental or physical facilities. This causes huge tension that no one in the family escapes. It's been happening in my family too - my grandmother lives with my father and she has Alzheimer's. I can completely relate to not wanting to go to family functions because everyone is so tense. My mom is dealing with my stepfather who has the same ailment on the other side of the country (he is 15 years older than she is), and so there is so much sadness in her voice when I speak with her on the phone (I rarely see her ( ... )
