That Book

Every once in awhile, That Book hits your reading circle. And we all have a reading circle, even if it's not a group that meets in person; we connect through blogs and twitter and various other means so we can geek out and talk about what we're reading, what we've loving, and what infuriates us. So That Book hits your circle, and the buzz surrounding it is positively deafening. Everyone is psyched to read this book! Everything about it sounds amazing, and when the first reviews start rolling in, they're full of praise. And these aren't just any reviews. They're reviews written by people whose opinions you can trust, whose thoughts on books align pretty closely to yours. Clearly this is the book to be had.

So naturally, you rush to procure yourself a copy by whatever means possible. You must read this book! And then you get your paws on it and you realize... you don't see what the big deal was. It's at best a mediocre book, something that shouldn't have been more than a blip on the radar. So... what's the deal? Is it you, and you're just missing something? Or is it everyone else?

I think we've all had this happen a time or two. For me, sometimes it's a case of my not having read it when I was in the best frame of mine for the kind of book it was. Sometimes by the time I've gotten around to reading the book, it's starting to show its age. Sometimes I have no explanation for why others love it while I see nothing special in it. But really, that's kind of the joy in having so many options when it comes to books. This one didn't work for me? Oh well, let's try another!

So please, feel free to tell me about your most recent experience with That Book, or to add more reasons to my list of "why it works for everyone but me."
