In the End

Sometimes the books we read don't have the ending we expect. Sometimes this is a good thing, because it means we get a delicious plot twist, that the butler didn't do it after all, and like the characters in the story we fell for a skillfully executed red herring. (To this day, I have a love/hate relationship with the sucker punch at the end of Atonement.) That type of unexpected ending is a truly beautiful thing. Other times... well...

So. For better or worse, what's the last book you read where the ending totally took you by surprise? Did it change your opinion of the story?
