Oh well, can't be helped...
I had a conversation with my teacher this afternoon concerning the grade I got for my text translation exam.
The result was that there really isn't anything that can be done to turn that grade into a passing one. We talked the exam and its answers through and it's just clear that I didn't answer correctly or filled in the answers efficiently enough. But there were answers that I got completely correct, so my teacher was positive about my skills.
What needs to be done now is that I make an appointment with my study coordinator to see what measures need to be taken next. I might be excluded from the sequel course to the one I failed. That would be nasty, as it would mean I will lose the single Japanese class I have for the whole week and semester. Yeah, my hours of actual active Japanese has been reduced to just two a week. I hope I can get permission to at least attend the class, so my Japanese skills stay up to date, even if I am not allowed to attend the ending exam.
Another thing my teacher pointed out is that I may have to write a letter to the exam commission concerning the classes I will have to retake next year. According to the current rules, all Japanese language courses are rolled into a single packet. This includes Text Translations, Conversation and Kanji. But since I passed the last two, I should be able to get permission to skip those classes and just attend the classes I still need to pass. Would suck to do both Conversation AND Kanji over just because I failed Translation.
My teacher is an awesome person. He certainly isn't the type of teacher who lives to see students fail. He told me a few things that really lifted my spirits:
"I believe in your skills. You did the assignments in class nicely and you proved you can do it. If the exam commission makes an issue out of that, just tell me and I will do whatever I can to support you. You have my blessing."
"Don't let this exam scare you off or make you doubt your translation skills. Universities like to babble with their exams and their obligatory rules. But universities are a totally different environment than when you have your own business. Just keep your motivation and affinity with what you want to do after you graduate." (This was after I expressed my worries about me not being good enough to cut it as a freelance translator)
"Yeah, be stubborn! Lots of people achieved great things by being stubborn."
(After looking at my points on the exam for a long time) "0.9 points... that sucks, that really sucks... I know."
"If you have ANY questions, problems or other issues... just mail me. I am there to help."
He is a really nice person and very motivating XD I hope I will get him for the retake of the course next year ^^
