Met with Veterans Group

Yesterday I met with my veterans group. I belong to a glbt group called American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER). The organization works to help glbt vets get treatment and care at VA hospitals. I joined AVER two years ago. I never thought of joining a vets group but when I went to a meeting, I felt comfortable.

Business was discussed and a progress report was given. Another transgeder woman came to the meeting. There are a number of transgender vets among us. We will be marching in two pride parades in June. I marched in the big parade last year and truly enjoyed it. There were a number of transgender people, which was happy to see.

One of the projects we have is to get the Don't Ask, Don't Tell amendment repealed. This has done harm because fine men and women are discharged because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. I'm proud of my time in the service. I'm equally proud of being a transgender veteran though I discovered that I was trans only a few years ago.

I want to see vets be treated right during and after their service. That's why I am active with AVER. I'm grateful to the many glbt veterans who served before me. I'm eternally grateful to those who made the supreme sacrifice. To me these are the heroes.

proud, american veteran for equal rights, transgender, veterans, don't ask don't tell, glbt
