PSHS-Diliman Board of Trustees caves to lawsuit threats
Our batch is in uproar because of the news that 9 students from Batch 2009 (this year's graduating seniors) are being allowed to graduate with a DOST-PSHS diploma despite failing 1/3 or more of their 4th year academic units, in addition to 2 of them having outstanding disciplinary cases.
Short story: Nine 4th year students received grades lower than 2.5 in more than 1/3 of their academic units (including 4th year Math - Math 5), which automatically makes them ineligible for graduation. In addition to that, 2 out of the 9 students have pending disciplinary cases for fraud. But despite this, ALL NINE ARE BEING ALLOWED TO GRADUATE because THEIR PARENTS THREATENED TO SUE PISAY. WTF?!?! According to the parents, the Math teachers who failed their children are incompetent, mean-spirited people who delight in torturing their students. This merits another WTF?! as the Math teachers in question are veterans who have received performance evaluations higher than 9.0 (out of 10) for the past 5 years, and the PEs are mostly based on student ratings!
THE FACTS:
1/3 rule states that:
“ A scholar may be recommended for probationary status in the incoming year if he
receives final grades of 2.75 or 3.0 in 2 or more subjects but not to exceed 1/3 of the total
units enrolled in the current year.” A student may be recommended for dismissal if he
receives grades lower than 2.5 in more than 1/3 of the total units enrolled in the current year.
(Section III.3.1 of the Revised Guidelines on Promotion, Probation and Dismissal of PSHS
Students).
Graduation: Upon completion of the 4th year, a student is recommended for graduation as
PSHS scholar UNLESS:
- He/she incurs a grade of 5.0
- He is dropped for disciplinary reasons
- He is dropped for incurring 13 or more unexcused absences
- He receives grades lower than 2.5 in more than 1/3 of the total number of units for the
- 4th year level.
On those who failed the 1/3 rule:
- The fourth year level has 12 academic units. 1/3 is 4 units,
- 9 students failed the 1/3 rule.
- 4 students failed in 5 units, 2 students in 6 units, 2 students in 7 units, another in 8 units.
>> One failed 8 out of 12 units? So what the heck did he pass, Phys Ed?!
On the Discipline Case:
- Several students were charged with fraud for counterfeiting and using the counterfeit chits during the YMSAT. The chits amounted to thousands of pesos.
- Evidences were caught in their possession. They admitted participation ONLY AFTER the evidences were presented to them.
- The discipline committee recommended that the scholarship of the 2 primary offenders be terminated. They are also sanctioned to get a character rating of NI for the 4th quarter.
- The accomplices must render community service.
- The scholarship committee expressed their support for the discipline committee’s recommendations through a vote during a meeting on March 11, 2009. It was almost a
- unanimous vote with only 1 dissenting vote.
- 3 of the offenders also failed the 1/3 rule.
On the issue of Math 5:
(To answer allegations of randomly reassigning different weights to bases of grade.)
- ” Teachers have the prerogative to assign different weight factors to categories they prefer to use as the bases for arriving at the tentative grade provided these are consistent with the units’ standard.” Section 3.4 of PSHS GRADING SYSTEM This was also done in favor of the students.
- With the guidance of the unit head, the fourth year level teachers have decided to incorporate the achievement test in the periodic exam component. The achievement test is a standardized test covering the first three quarters, while the periodic exam covers the fourth quarter topics. Both exams were given to all the seniors of the Main Campus.
- Thus, the achievement was given a weight of 3/4 while the periodic exam was given a weight of 1/4. Hence, this component covers the whole year’s curriculum.
- In the past 5 years, the two Math 5 teachers have a performance evaluation higher than 9.0 (10 is the maximum). Evaluation is mostly based on student rating and other factors.
Graduation Pronouncement
- During the graduation pronouncement, the 2 primary offenders were included in the roll of those who will graduate but they will not be allowed to march since they have to render their community service for 30 days. Their character rating of NI will also be changed to F upon completion of their community service.
- All those who failed the 1/3 rule are also included in the graduation roll.
- The BOT is the final deciding body.
I will be the first to admit that my HS Math grades were never stellar. In fact, I see-sawed between a 2.75, 2.5, and 2.25 (2.5 is Pisay's passing grade) from 2nd to 4th year. But the thing is, I did the work needed to pass in the end. I attended all of Sir Ces' review sessions in BRHA. I (very humbly) asked Ron, Les, and Nestee to tutor me on more than one occasion. I submitted homework. Again, I did the work so that I could pass. And now, these 9 students are going to waltz away with a PSHS diploma because their parents threatened to fucking sue the school if their precious children did not graduate EVEN IF THEY DON'T DESERVE TO DO SO? Where the fuck do they get their sense of entitlement? And who the heck are these parents that the Board of Trustees actually caved and are going to let them get away with it? Jesus Christ, a classmate of mine was kicked out because he failed Art. ART! If he got kicked out because he failed ART, then these 9 students deserve to get kicked out because of freaking MATH.
To the parents: If your kids can't hack it, if they're not willing to do the work, then they DON'T DESERVE TO BE IN PISAY. There are no dumb people in Pisay, only LAZY ones.
To the Board of Trustees: How can you let them get away with it?! Where's the support for the faculty, the disciple committee, and the scholarship committee? These students have had second chances and third chances and fourth chances. How can you let these delinquents graduate with a PSHS diploma? These students are going to serve as images of what a PSHS graduate is - a lazy, dishonest person who relies on threats and power in order to get through life. Is that what you want to happen?
I busted my ass for 4 years to graduate from Pisay and I am inordinately proud to be associated with the institution. However, that's going to change if something this despicable pushes through.
No compromises.
