Today, there was no school. This is because our district requires us to take 8 furlough days. Meaning teachers get paid 8 days less than they did last year. Our district, not wanting to put these days anywhere convenient, made all the furlough days on Wednesdays. The thought behind that being that people would be more inclined to vote for tax increases to benefit the school if they had to suffer otherwise. Forgetting, of course, that it's not parents who vote down the tax increases, it's seniors.
Anyhoo, I'm not one to waste free days. First I took my kids to the brand new skate park by our school. We got there early to avoid the crowd and the first thing the kids did was abandon their bikes and boards because this is much more fun:

I did take the bike, but I was very, very lame on it. T-9 asked for a skateboard from the in-laws for her birthday just for this very park. And they delivered. She got around to riding it the last hour we were there and some punk kid told her she was slow on it. She told him that was because she just got it and was learning. I told her that if people say stuff to her that annoys her, she should repeat it back, but add 'Your mom' to the front.
We practiced:
Me: You're slooow.
T-9: Your mom is slow.
Me: You suck
T-9: Your mom sucks.
Me: Ooooh, I don't know T. This could be like that time I told you to tell kids 'know what rhymes with butt up? Shut up!' and the first time you tested it out
you got punched in the face. Maybe we should rethink this strategy.
However, concrete fun was not enough for us. We also went horseback riding! And they told me that I could come back and take the fast trail next time I didn't have kids because I am a great rider. That's because when I went to college there was a horseback riding class. Kids, Liberal Arts is the way to go!
not a fan of the ride. That face never changed and he kept asking how much longer.
got the horse she wanted and was happy, but nervous.
somehow g
ot the same horse he did the first time we went riding ... the horse he, ahem, fell off of!
such an awesome rider, taking selfies mid action.
Ye-haw!
I need a nap.
