a night out...finally

C and I finally got to get out on Saturday! We test fired a new babysitter as our usual one had a baby shower to go to. Given that it was for her she kind of had to go. The new sitter is cool; kind of reminds me of QD lite.

We went and saw the Watchmen. C hadn't read the book but I had (several times). Overall I agree with apostate_96's review here, but with the following caveats:

- I think they were handicapped by the sheer amount of background material. There was so much to get across and only so much time to do it in (the movie still came in at 160 minutes and it felt rushed). The newspaper vendor, the pirate subplot, the abbreviated history of Roschach - all the other bits of fluff that made up the story probably just wound up on the cutting room floor.

- all the costumes were solid, with the exception of Veidt, who was just wrong.

- all the characters worked well for me - especially Deiberg and the Comedian. Again, Veidt was just wrong.

- I disagree with my esteemed colleague: even in the book, the Silk Spectre came across to me as a weak willed neurotic flake. I felt like she was accurately portrayed in the movie.

- the ending sucked goat testicles.
