Looking Back... (Goosebumps)

A discussion with a 5th grade student of mine made me think. We were talking about reading and why we read and what got us to read.

As a kid I liked to read. Casual little stuff here or there. But when I look back, there is definitely that one defining moment where I went from liking to read here or there to loving to read for fun. And the book that started that was Goosebumps #19: Deep Trouble by R.L. Stine. I loved the story and writing style and couldnt put it down. This book made me look up the other Goosebumps books and through that series I became someone who loved to read. I owe a lot to this series.

It makes me smile when I am walking around my classroom and I see that my students are still reading Goosebumps. It's cool to see that the series is surviving and that a new generation is enjoying them. Above all its nice to see the students enjoying to read. Goosebumps is helping them like it helped me.
