I am copying
wanderlustlover and putting up all of my sentence-fics from yesterday's DE, because I very much like some of them.
For those of you who don't follow
milliways_bar, what that means is that this is a collection of single-sentence fics written to prompts. Crossovers are frequent; AUs do occur; context is optional. Several occur in the game's setting, which is a pan-dimensional bar, or assume friendships that occurred there. (Also: because I am long-winded, I tend to use the semi-colon to strain the one-sentence rule to the breaking point. Pedants are warned.)
Firefly
Regan with darts
"Well, Captain Reynolds," says Regan with a lopsided secret of a smile that makes her look a little like her daughter, even here in this Rim bar that doesn't match her designer slacks and not-casual-enough shoes, "it's been a few years, but I think I'd be willing to stake a drink on my aim," and for the first time Mal wonders if a game of darts with a Senator's wife will end up being like some of his other plans.
River: old-fashioned saltwater taffy
"'f it's a gorram misnomer, Stabby," Jayne grumbles, selecting another taffy by the expedient of skewering it with his knife, "how come you've already eaten ten?"
River, *smirks* First Date.
"I dunno, sweetheart," the other laughs, "I was just thinking dinner and ice cream, but a Milliways brawl sure was a memorable way to finish the night off."
Regan spending time with young River.
River wriggles herself more comfortably into place in her mother's lap, her small body warm and soft curls tickling Regan's neck; "Yes," Regan says fondly, "but qiānjīn, you still need to prove your theorem so other people see that it's obvious."
Something in the future - Ingress [of Neverwhere, with an in-game crossover with Valdemar] and River
"Yes, but River, dearling," Ingress stifles her laughter long enough to manage, "the Collegium scholars haven't had any astrophysics training, and I'm terribly afraid you'll give them existential crises if I let you correct their notes."
"You go long-range," Herald Ingress snaps to the gunslinger, "I'll cover your back," and she sets her shoulders against her friend's as she slashes sideways in The Rose Unfolds; her Whites will be in a dreadful state after this, but she can't think of better company for a zombie invasion.
River and Anthy [Himemiya, of Revolutionary Girl Utena] and a goat.
"The retinal geography optimizes surveillance," River advises Anthy, who makes a noncommittal sound; Mr Jezebel Henrietta, ignoring the conversation going on over his head, tries to take a bite out of the can of sparkly hoofpaint.
Gundam Wing
Trowa, the power of silence, both good and bad.
Trowa knows that some people find words come easily and lightly, an idle rush of patter they see no reason to control; he's never fully understood that, despite the occasional advantage of the tactic, because there's so much to learn by silence, and so much to say with it, and so much he doesn't think he could say no matter how hard he tried.
Trowa and Havelock [Vetinari, of Discworld] on the merits of knives over guns
"Elegance is irrelevant," says one; "it's primarily a question of required stealth and distance," and the other lifts an eyebrow as if to say, indeed.
Trowa meeting the Trowabot. (Built by Zechs. Let's not ask why.) [I did not ask. It was
shati's prompt.]
The entire idea was disconcerting, uncomfortable, and tactically very dubious -- but Trowa did have to privately admit that the built-in machine guns would have come in handy a time or two.
Ouran High School Host Club
Honey, on first finding the bunny.
Grandmother may be Honey's favorite person in his entire family (Mori, of course, excepted) -- she's kind and sweet and plump and bakes cookies by the dozen, and her side kicks can punch through five layers of brick, and she's just presented him with the cutest pink bunny in the whole entire world.
Honey and Uzura [of Princess Tutu], bonding.
Honey's face is a picture of utter horror, before he firms his resolve and declares, "If you can't eat cake, Zura-chan, I'll eat twice as much for you!!"
Honey, if it were possible to get drunk off of rum cake.
"So..." Haruhi murmurs to Kyouya, ignoring the tiny blond form that twirls past her in a slightly unsteady cloud of sakura blossoms, "is this because of Tamaki-senpai's rum cake, or just because he's Honey-senpai?"
Princess Tutu
Edel, death and rebirth.
A puppet isn't truly alive, so death should be a meaningless word, and self shouldn't be much better, and it shouldn't matter at all what a smith takes it into his head to do with some ashes and charcoal; then again, she isn't quite alive enough yet to think, Drosselmeyer's been wrong before.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Hawkeye - training for dogs and alchemists
"Please try not to teach Hayate bad habits, sir," Hawkeye says to her superior officer, across the table and two seats down and visibly considering tossing the puppy a scrap of greasy cafeteria pizza; "Such a harsh taskmaster, lieutenant," Mustang tells her, and eats the pizza himself.
Hawkeye and a non-Mustang teammate, day off.
"Look, Lieutenant," opines Havoc, leaning back in his chair to better spread his hands in I'm-just-telling-it-how-I-see-it nonchalance, "all I'm saying is, a man needs some entertainment in his life, and the county fair dealing with Ed on a sugar high would be completely hilarious."
Riza on Terminators! [with request for no FMA spoilers]
"I'm looking for my brother," the girl monotones, and if you look carefully you can see how her eyes might hold a red glow; "I haven't seen him," Hawkeye says after a moment, levelly, her back very straight, and she doesn't reach for her gun.
The Wheel of Time
Lan in the House of Uquar [of Homeward Bounders]
No one had ever heard of the stranger, or even his country, though he carried himself like a warlord -- but whispers spread to the farthest corners of the House when Uquar's Hand greeted him with a startled and genuine smile, and hardly snapped at all when she shared coffee with him like an ally.
