three days before the date, i decided to go to barcelona with seven other people. fantastic! because i delayed in booking my flight i saved ten pounds, although since i missed my flight and had to pay fifty pounds to go the next day, i guess that didn't matter so much. my friends all flew from newcastle and their flight was a bit earlier than mine, so they went to the train station for 9am, while i didn't have to go until 10. imagine my surprise when i saw them in a stream of people heading towards a platform. their train was delayed! oh woe, i thought, they will miss their flight! but liz was already in barcelona, so i guessed it would just be her and i that evening. imagine my surprise when upon getting to the ticket counter the guy tells me i won't make my flight. apparently getting from edinburgh to prestwick takes three hours on a sunday instead of the usual two. from now on i will be double checking train times.

but! i did make a new friend. seba, from uruguay, who lives in andorra, spain. he told me that dali's house is in figueres, which is very near girona, the airport we flew to, and so i got to go see that, which otherwise i wouldn't have!

barcelona was so lovely and sunny! on the main street you can buy pets from vendors! not in a store, just imagine... someone selling art on the causeway, but instead of art, it's animals.

antoni gaudi was a really inventive architecht who designed a bunch of buildings in barcelona, including a church and a park, so we went to see that stuff, and it was grand.

and dali's house, well...

i didn't get to spend as much time in there as i would have liked because my ability to understand spoken numbers in spanish leaves much to be desired, and i thought she said five to two, not five to twelve. whoops! i was also very tired and most likely hungover. however, that gave me time to go see the small gallery of the jewelry he designed, which was fantastic! the best thing i think was a life-sized golden human heart with a little door that was open, with a ruby-encrusted beating heart inside that. i took a video and one day will upload it to youtube. the most macabre piece of jewelry i have ever seen!

i finished :emma: the other day. it was nowhere near as good as :pride and prejudice:, but what can you do? i started reading :everything bad is good for you: (though i still haven't finished :guns, germs, and steel:) and have many other books in my queue, including :remains of the day:, which i have long wanted to read.

tomorrow is saying goodbye to 4 people, two forever, and two for a wee bit. also possibly laser tag, and definitely calling these people so they can employ me for the month until i go to canada for christmas. yes, i will be experiencing my first canadian christmas (read: fucking cold) in pembrooke, ontario, with mark and his family. i look forward to good beer and ... well, aside from meeting all of mark's people, i guess that's all! i really didn't expect to be returning to canada so soon, even if it is a completely different part of the country.
