i was walking along a random street today and i saw a plant that looked familiar.
"that looks like... scottish broom! of course!" yes, they have scottish broom in scotland. and least i think it was scottish broom. the flowers weren't purely yellow, had some red on them, but it looked the same. i guess it makes sense that they'd have this plant proudly in their gardens instead of attacking it like the pernicious weed it is in victoria.
i think i'm going to like this city. it's gray but warm today, reminds me of home in some ways. walking around i keep trying to equate one part of the city with some part of victoria, but it doesn't work. i'm thinking of living off leith walk, or maybe in broughton, but we'll see. i'm not really sure where what areas are, though i may have walked through them. i'm going to get a more extensive city map sometime soon, i think. i have a little tourist map and with my 1.5 - 2hour walks i keep going off it. i looked at a map today and there are so many golf courses in the area that they have their own separate colour! it's just another shade of green, sure, but really. golf. tsk.
my travel day is hazy in my memory due to lack of sleep. i had about five hours sleep before i left on tuesday, and then for some reason i decided to get drunk in the seattle airport. i had never done that before, gotten drunk before a flight. i don't know if it made it harder to sleep or not. thankfully no one was sitting next to me on my 9 hour flight so i could stretch out a bit more than usual, but i still barely slept. i think i was in some sort of dozing state for most of it.
random copenhagen image:
i did manage to get into copenhagen (which they pronounce something like "shopenhaun") but it was only for an hour or so as i felt like a zombie. danish sounds like really gibbered english. some words are exactly the same, and the pronounciation seems quite similar. all the danish people i spoke to spoke english with an english-like (UK) accent.
i was so very, very glad to finally get into edinburgh. the hostel (
castle rockis alright, a bit big for me i think. there are around 200 beds and i'm in a 6-bed all-girl dorm room. my roommates are ... very young canadian girls. hah, i feel so old, they're probably about 19 or so. looking back, i think i felt very young the first time i was in europe at 20. the castle is across the street and i haven't been into it yet. i almost went to check it out last night but i didn't know if it cost money or not, so i just passed it by. i haven't done a single touristy thing! i want to go on this
literary pub tour but maybe not tonight, as tonight is friday and i hope to meet some fellow travelers and go out with them. there are a few people here who work for 2-3 hours a day for free lodging, and have paying jobs elsewhere in the city. i don't know if i'd want to do that, especially at a place like this... we'll see. i'm more of the mind of actually living here, not just using this city as a base for further adentures, at least not yet. it's going to be hard to get myself into a routine because i've been unemployed for so long, but i'm sure i'll get around to it.
well! the kitchen should be open now so i think i will make meself some lunch. so hungry!
