You're not supposed to tip fast food workers, and those are people that are running cashier, taking order, and cooking the food, all at minimum wage and all in under 5 minutes, but tips at a "restuarant" is obligatory, even if its a shithole like Denny's or Shari's, no matter how bad the food or service are... why? And how come you dont tip the cook, when the food is good, or the host when the drinks are good or you are seated fast? Why only the waiter/tress? And why are you supposed to tip big when they do well, and just tip less, rather than nothing, when they do bad?

The service industry is wonderful, we need them, and if I were a waitress, barista, etc, I would want tips.. and I would like to be tipped as to how well Im serving... and of course, a day without alot of tips is going to piss me off... just like a day when I dont make sales bonus... sometimes its your fault, sometimes its not... but tips, bonuses etc are INCENTIVES and NOT obligatory.

I think its stupid who we do and don't tip in the service industry and there are ALOT of people who work just as hard in it, who don't get shit.. like maidservice in motels, fast food employees, grocery-store employees (baggers, cashiers, etc) service people in retail,.. etc. So why tip shitty service just because its customary, when there are LOTS of people out there working hard to make me happy for shit wages who rarely get anything above their 15/hr/week paycheck, no matter how wonderful they were.

damn straight. how much holy hell would be raised if a McDonald's worker put a tip jar beside there cash register?
if i am staying multiple nights in a hotel i will tip big on the first night and moderate the rest of the time.
wait staff are supposed to tip out (give money to) the hostess and bartender the ones that do are treated accordingly the ones that don't are as well. kitchen staff normally make more than floor staff. however if your waitress is always kind to the kitchen the kitchen is kind back.

Nah, McDonalds wouldn't take that shit... they'd crush the tip jar in their mighty corporate hand, and then take the infidel behind the garbage to be shot in the head.

The cooks get $8 an hour starting out generally. They get that regardless of whether the restaurant is busy or not, whereas servers lose a lot of money if they have no customers, since they get only three dollars an hour.

I agree that lots of jobs should be tippable though.

I know waitresses are supposed to report their tips.. and that in some restaurants there are strange tipping rules... like if you make more than X dollars an hour during your shift because of tips.. then the rest of your tips will be put in a pool for everyone else to share.. or if your tipping wage is more than what the kitchen staff is making,.. then you cant keep the extra.. or if you double the states min wage with tips, then you can only keep your wage... stuff like that. I think Denny's (at least here) does tip-sharing.. where waitresses/hostesses make min wage (which is 7.35 here) and all tips are communal and shared equally between the staff on that shift.
