SLC! Been there twice in my life, once just driving across the desert in Grandpa's Chevy Suburban (no AC, AM radio!) and then once for a church trip. I guess because of the Olympics they have light rail running all over the place with almost nobody on it.
It sounds like you're going to have an amazing summer. All the plans! Look forward to hearing about each piece.
Sadly with the way Christianity is going Mom's question sounds less off-base than it would have 20 years ago.
I would love to go ride a practically empty light rail, I gotta admit!
Mom lives in a small rural community where their town "Welcome to [Town's Name]" sign was replaced with a "Welcome to Trump Country! We love God, Guns, and Our Neighbors! GO BADGERS!"
So... she DOES live in a pit of vipers of one or two especially poisonous kinds...
I just looked up the demographics because I'm like, "There is somewhere whiter than here besides *Vermont*? I wouldn't be surprised if it was SLC!"
Nope. SLC has us beat by a long margin by its diversity. I admit, I'm kinda surprised!
I wonder if its overarching local culture just makes it seem/feel very... white! We're a big hub for LDS families, too.. and wherever they settle a big temple, a very pasty white community comes with it, it seems.
SLC as a whole certainly has a diverse demographic, no doubts. But at the personal level, *I* have only ever gotten to spend time downtown, which is where the Tabernacle is...and which is where the overarching local culture is definitely very white! Exactly as you say, the "pasty white community" that goes along with that, uh, structure :P
Did you know the co-creator of the U.S. Torture Program is LDS? And that it was created and taught to soldiers **in Spokane** at our military base? Not-So-Fun Facts!
I am going to SLC without any real preconceptions except what I learned from SLC Punk! Ha!
