Summary: Elphaba's nineteenth birthday is right around the corner, and the green girl only wishes for it to come and pass already, however, Glinda is determined to make her new best friend realize that her birthday is special just like everyone else's, no matter what the cost, but will she end up doing more harm than good?

Two days and several unfortionate attempts to pry Elphaba of what was bothering her, later, the weekend hit and Glinda took the time to relax her mind from the diligent studies her brain had been issued in classes that morning, she was starting to seriously worry about her sorcery class and hoped that Madame Morrible would not fail her if she got the spells they were sure to perform as the test, wrong. Maybe I can ask Elphie to help, Glinda thought when it struck her that her emerald roommate was not in the room, but had opted to run off to the library after classes were done to get more studying in. Somehow, within the time of her encounter two nights ago, Elphaba had withdrawn even further into herself, and she would not clue as to why, and she began to worry.

It seemed that Elphaba was one of the only things that stayed constant on her mind and it drove her into near insanity, she knew that she had to be concentrating if she wanted to make it into next semester with at least half-decent grades, but couldn't help but be scared for her best friend's health, surely it wasn't good for one to read twenty four seven and not eat or sleep..She always did look too skinny, Glinda's mind rambled on. Arghhhh! Shut up! We cannot afford to think about Elp- Miss Elphaba any longer, you need to concentrate on that levitation spell or else wind up blowing up another object like that sandwhich that Elphie had been eating...GAHHH Glinda fell back onto her bed, screaming into her pillow in exasperation, it seemed that no matter how badly she tried, her mind would always wind up thinking about the green girl she slept only a few feet away from each night. Why was it she could not stop thinking of her? There was nothing special about her... well, except the fact that she was green and stuck out like a sore thumb.. No, that isn't true, Elphaba is special, I dont care what anyone else thinks, she is beautiful, smart, funny, well... sometimes, and deffinitely one of the most selfless people I've ever met, how could I have been so horrible to her in the beginning? Glinda chastised herself.

"Glinda, I was wondering if you could- oh, my I'm sorry, is something wrong, Miss Glinda?"Nessarose's voice floated into the room as Glinda noticed Elphaba's younger spoiled and crippled sister be wheeled into the room by Nanny.

"Huh?"Glinda asked. "Oh, no, sorry Nessa, I was just thinking about Elphaba, she seems so distant lately, I'm worried,"at this, Nessa let out a laugh that sent chills down Glinda's spine.

"Oh, my dear Miss Glinda, I wouldn't worry yourself over my sister, she is only going through that festive faze she goes through every year at this time,"Nessa said. When Glinda looked at her in confusion she explained,"Elphaba's birthday, its next tuesday, she always goes into that stupid bout of depression, sinking herself into something to make her forget, afterall-"

"Elphaba's birthday? Why didn't she say anything?"Glinda asked, slightly put out that her best friend never mentioned her own birthday.

"Dont take it personally, Miss Glinda, Elphaba does not like to celebrate her birthday, she never has, so you shouldnt worry, it would only upset her if you tried,"Nessa said, "Now about these notes for history, I was hoping to borrow yours so Nanny or Elphaba could copy them for me later?"she asked. Glinda stared unblinkingly at Nessa, trying hard to understand why Nessa would think anyone would hate there own birthday, but then again, Nessa knew Elphaba so much more than Glinda did, she quickly snapped out of her reverie and looked around for her notes, placing them in Nessa's lap before Nanny wheeled her back into the room. She did not notice that Nanny did not follow her all the way and heard the door snap with a click before she snapped her head up to see Nanny look at her dissapprovingly.

"What?"Glinda asked.

"You'd think best to leave it be, I'm thinking that if you didn't know Elphaba's birthday by now, she doesn't want you to know,"Nanny said, sharply.

"But how? I'm her best friend, I thought I was at least, Elphaba's birthday is important to me,"Glinda said.

"But it isn't to her, deary, Nessa was right, Elphaba has never celebrated her birthday, not that her father ever cared anyhow, but she only saw that day as a day of sadness, a day where she knew she brought the first heap of misery into her parents lives, so as I said, it would be best if you just let it lie, and not let Elphaba know anything more of it,"Nanny said.

"Thats poppycock! Everyone's birthday is special! It's a day that everyone should celebrate because it's their special day, Elphaba is a special person to me, and whether she wants it or not, I'm going to prove to her she is!"Glinda said matter-of-factly. Nanny shook her head and sighed.

"Foolish girl, I'm guessing you never did know how to listen to your elders, Elphaba is special, and thats exactly what she hates to be reminded of,"Nanny said, not waiting for Glinda to respond, she turned on her heel and entered the room after Nessa, shutting the door behind her. Glinda sat and thought about what Nanny had meant by that statement, she knew that Elphaba was special, why would she hate to be reminded? Was it because she was green? Maybe. But Glinda didn't see her that way anymore, maybe to the old Galinda, but now, Elphaba's skin color was merely apart of what she distinguished as just Elphaba. She couldnt imagine her any other way, green, sarcastic, with beautiful dark eyes, a deep yet soft voice and a heart that was so much bigger than that of anyone else's she had ever met. Glinda had been so hurtful toward Elphaba in the beginning, and then after trying to pull that horrendous prank on her, Elphaba had gone out of her way to get Glinda into Madame Morrible's sorcery class, knowing that she had wanted it so dearly. Glinda wasn't exactly sure if that was the exact moment she started to see Elphaba in a different light, or if it were when she showed up to the dance wearing the hat she had given her and felt her eyes sting with tears as Elphaba, strong willed and stonefaced, waltz'd onto the dance floor and attempted to dance, even as the music died and the laughter grew, Glinda found that Elphaba gave her a strength no one else had ever managed, as she walked over and cut in, and as Glinda slid her hand into Elphaba's for the first time, ever touching the green girl, knew she'd take no other dance partner that night. Then there was that makeover, where she made Elphaba "popular" surprised at her own results, she had let it slip how she thought Elphaba looked beautiful, then saw Elphaba smile her first real smile before darting off without excuse...Glinda's heart sunk thinking she had hurt her feelings, but did not regret letting Elphaba know her true notion, indeed, the emerald girl may not have been pretty to the normal eye, but inside, her brains, her heart and her pride made her shine like a new star, beautiful.

"Oh Elphie, you're special to me, and just you wait, whether you think so or not, I'm gonna make sure that this birthday is one you never forget, and though you may protest, your disinterest, I know clandestinely! You're gonna grin and bare it, you're newfound specialness to me!"she said in a sing-song voice, mimicking her words from that night. She immediately dashed to her desk and began scribbling notes and jotting down plans and ideas, not noticing how the sky outside grew darker, and how the time flew by, not stopping once.

Elphaba finally walked inside around eleven-thirty, a bit later than the curfew but not caring as she slid the lock into place and carefully slipped out of her jacket and boots, placing her bookbag down on her desk, noticing the glowing embers of firelight dying down. She squinted around in the darkness, finding her nightshirt and went into the bathroom to change, it wasn't until she came out that she noticed the trail of light from the bathroom land on her shorter blonde roommate, passed out at her desk, a quill in one hand, a bottle of ink open and several papers shuffled around her. Wondering what in Oz Glinda could have been doing all night, flew past her as she noticed the way her roomie laid, there was no way that she would wake up without feeling that in the morning, so Elphaba decided, for once, to not make her suffer. She walked over and scooped up the tiny girl in her arms, surprisingly enough, Glinda did not wake, but snuggled into Elphaba's chest, and unconsciously wrapped her arms around her neck.

"Lurline, you're so light, I'm going to start making sure that you eat more often,"Elphaba whispered as she carried the slumbering blonde over to the frilly pink bed and helped her under the covers, deciding against dressing her for bed, "she'd probably kill me,"Elphaba thought aloud, before looking down at the girl, moonlight streaming through her curly blonde locks that for once, didn't look so perfect, but were jumbled up around her head, splashed across her pillow, she smiled, tucking a stray bang behind Glinda's ear and leaning down, pressed her lips to her brow in a soft kiss.

"Fresh dreams, my sweet,"Elphaba whispered, tucking her in, a small smile crept onto Glinda's delicate features as she gave a soft, sleepy sigh and turned over, startling Elphaba, who hoped she had not been pretending to sleep, but was assured when soft snores began to emit from the girl. Elphaba walked over to her bed, slid under the covers and shivered from the coolness of her sheets, already beginning to miss the warmth that Glinda provided when she carried her over to the bed. Placing her glasses on her nightstand, she rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling, a frown appearing on her features, the smile,"how I wish I could be the one to make you smile like that all the time, Glinda, but alas, I know nothing of happiness, how could I ever make you happy? Afterall, happiness is what happens when all your dreams come true.. and I doubt very highly that I ever get the pleasure of being in any of yours, maybe nightmares, but never a dream,"Elphaba sighed sadly and blinked away the sting of tears that threatened to pool in her eyes, she looked over at her slumbering roomie once more before turning over and trying to fall asleep.. not knowing that sometime in the middle of that sentence, Glinda's eyes popped open and she caught some of what Elphaba had said...

"Elphie.. if only you knew,"Glinda whispered softly, shut her eyes and went back to sleep.
