Summary: Elphaba's nineteenth birthday is right around the corner, and the green girl only wishes for it to come and pass already, however, Glinda is determined to make her new best friend realize that her birthday is special just like everyone else's, no matter what the cost, but will she end up doing more harm than good?
"Elphie?"Glinda asked, her voice uncertain and cautious, her roomie had been even more distant that usual this past week and Glinda had begun to worry that maybe she had done something wrong to offend her new best friend, afterall, she did take off without warning after she had tried to give her that makeover after the OzDust.
"What?"Elphaba snapped lightly, not taking her nose out of the thick text in her hands, her back straight against the wall, dark eyes darting along the pages behind her spectacles. Night had fallen in the dorm and as usual, the two fell into their normal routine, Elphaba had used her oils to bathe, then Glinda would take up the rest, if not all the night in the bathroom, primping and prepping for the day ahead, whereas Elphaba would curl up with a book and read until her eyes were too tired to take anymore. Nanny and Nessarose were in the next room, no doubt getting ready for bed.
"Are you alright?"Glinda asked.
"Why wouldn't I be?"Elphaba asked bitterly, her eyes still not leaving the text, however, she found that she was unable to read any further than the paragraph she was at whilst Glinda remain talking to her.
"Just curious, you've seemed so quiet, and thrown into your studies lately, I just hope that you're not upset...or something,"Glinda stated matter-of-factly, smoothing out the nonexistant wrinkles in her pink nightgown, lowering her eyes and her voice.
"Midterms are coming up, my sweet, and yes, I've been throwing myself into my studies that way I can at least make sure I pass them, why would you think anything is wrong?"Elphaba said with a hint of anger in her voice, the blonde was very good at annoying her with such stupid questions sometimes.
"Well I'm sorry if I just wanted to make sure you're okay!"Glinda snapped,"you may not notice, but some of us here do actually give a damn about you!" Elphaba winced at the smaller blonde's words, she had not meant to be offensive, she just wanted to finish the damn page before daybreak.
"I'm sorry, Glin, I just haven't been in a very cheery mood lately, if I seem so out of sorts, I promise it will fade after midterms... maybe,"she sighed, not so sure herself, she knew that she was lying through her teeth, midterms were in no way the reason for her stress and strenuous studying, they were a small part of it, but the real reason she had become distant was fear of Glinda finding out what else was vastly approaching.
"Is..is it me?"Glinda asked in a small voice. Elphaba's head snapped up at this as she heard that frightened tone and she realized she would not get anymore studying done tonight, she dogeared the page and pulled her glasses off before standing slowly and approaching the bed, careful not to spook the girl, she kneeled in front of Glinda and tried to catch the girls eyes, which she found difficult as Glinda closed them to ward off the oncoming slaught of tears. Elphaba reached out a hand and went to cup her cheek but paused, afraid of making the girl recoil, afterall, who would want a green girl touching them? Glinda must have noticed the pause when nothing came and opened her eyes slowly to meet Elphaba's dark, fearful ones.
"Elphie?"she squeaked uncertainly. Elphaba pulled her hand back to her side and fought off a blush that tried to creep up into her cheeks, she averted her eyes to Glinda's pink comforter and mumbled something incoherently. "What?"
"I said, no,"Elphie raised her eyes to meet her gorgeous blonde roommates,"you did nothing to upset me, Glinda, I can promise you that, there's just a lot of stuff going on right now, and since the death of Dr. Dillamond and Ama Clutch, its just gotten worse, I'm sorry.."Elphaba stated. Glinda gave her a halfhearted smile, and Elphaba felt her cheeks burn and that familiar tingle in her stomach begin again. She couldn't understand why, or how, but ever since Glinda offered a dance at the OzDust that night to save her from embarrassment, Elphaba had been seeing her new friend in a whole different light, at first that's exactly what she thought it was, just friendship, something Elphaba had never accounted to have before in her entire life, but as the weeks began to pass, the feelings began to grow stronger, she would feel her cheeks flush whenever she caught eyes with her blonde roommate, and feel her heart begin to pound when she came into a room or stood close to Elphaba. Even more so were the slight tingles that would rush through her when Glinda would slip her hand into Elphaba's while walking beside her, and the dizziness spells that would cause her breathing to become heavy and labored, one time near faint when Glinda thought Elphie had a fever and placed her hand to her forehead, Elphaba had taken off in the opposite direction, stumbling, leaving Glinda lost and confused.
"Elphie?"Glinda asked. Elphaba blinked, noticing that she had sat there staring at her roommate for quite sometime, almost ogling, Glinda's eyebrows knitted together in confusion. Elphaba's face went a darker shade of green as she stood and walked back over to her bed.
"Fresh dreams, Glinda,"she slid under her covers and doused her oil lamp before turning her back to her friend and pretending to fall asleep, not noticing the small smile that crept up on Glinda's face, or the small pink hue that seemed to only grow brighter.
"Fresh dreams, Elphie,"she replied. Sleep did not find either girl that night.
