We went to Budapest castle today.
We walked across the chain-link brigde to Buda.
We took the Funicular up to the Castle area. You come up by the big metal Eagle statute. We turned right and walked toward the Vinna gate. We went past lots of old houses after the big square with the ruins of past castels buildings. Many of the old houses have shops on the groung floor and some have been “white washed” yellow.
There are lots of tour groups as you come up to Matyas Church. There was a violinist playing to the crowds, she was good. Then an old bloke started up on an Alpine horn and drowned her out. The violinist and other buskers where not happy with him but he stopped before a fight could break out.
Matyas church looks pretty on the outside, but it’s incredable in the inside. All the walls have been painted with fresco and geometric patterns. The windows are stain glass. There is an exabision up the Bela tower on religious arfifacts. In the first few rooms there are prists clothes and sticks, as well as chaices and crosses. The last room is about St Steven’s crown. The is no crown , that’s at the parlament building. The crown was made in the 5th centery and has been added to over the years. There is lot of scintiffic proff the crown is old and where it came from.
Outside the Matyas Church is a statue - the holy trails cloumn. This was put up to celabrate the end of a plague. Then there is the Fisherman’s Bastion, looking out to the Danube and Pest. By the Bastion is a Statue of King St.Steven on a horse. You have to pay to go on the Fisherman’s Bastion, but the view is just as good from underneath and there are less people. To the side is the ruin’s of an Medivel church.
We walked on to the Venna gate and along the outer walls. Behind the Amry museum are lot of Connons and mounted guns.
We went in to the labarith, it’s great, dark and very strange in places. There is a chamber with a fountine of vine, with lots of ivy and jokes about finding archoligical stuff, like laptops and a huge (2m plus) coke bottle inprinted in stone. There is a gaint head coming out of the floor. It’s very good.
We then went on to the castel/palace proper and had a walk around. There are some nice fountines and flower beds.
We walked back down thought the Gardens and back across the chain link Brigde.
We had dinner at the hotel.
