According to this, Andrew Shirvell has been suspended from his job. The article says that Mike Cox finally read Shirvell's blog and was appalled by Shirvell's comments about Armstrong. This probably had less to do with Cox's personal feelings--after all, Cox has "
actively worked to take benefits away from public employees who were receiving partner benefits for their same-sex partners"--than it did with Shirvell putting his spewings in writing and posting them in public.
Shirvell's apparently calling this suspension "a personal leave of absence."
Whether he's suspended or on leave,
when he gets back to work, he will face a disciplinary hearing.
Also from The Detroit News:
Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for campus police, confirmed Shirvell is subject to an ongoing investigation of "harassing or stalking" and banned from campus. Shirvell was read a trespass warning on Sept. 14 that bars him from setting foot on campus, Brown said. Shirvell is appealing the order, but no hearing date has been set.
Hopefully this will communicate to Shirvell that there are things you just can't say, regardless of what your personal beliefs are.
But I wouldn't make book on it.
You see, this isn't the first time he's harassed a gay activist.
He did the same thing two years ago, attacking Sean Kosofsky, the former policy director for gay-rights nonprofit Triangle Foundation.
Twice wouldn't constitute a pattern if you tried to prove it in court.
But it certainly suggests something, doesn't it?
