I agree with you completely.

At my second high school (the first having been shut down by the archbishop because he wasn't getting a cut from the tuition and the nuns couldn't afford to give him the cut that he wanted without tripling the tuition), I ran into a gang of four boys who decided one noontime to corner me in the hallway and attempt to rape me. I say "attempt" because my response was to stick my hand into the leader's pants, grab hold--and dig in with some VERY sharp nails.

He fell writhing to the floor.

Two of them backed away. The third, who was a true sadist, decided he was going to teach me a lesson. I noticed that the nurse's door was partly open (though the office was empty) and by maneuvering around got him to stand very close to that door. Then I shoved his arm into the door jamb and slammed the door shut.

It wasn't the last time that they tried attacking me. But it was the last time that they tried doing so up close and personal. It had never occurred to them that a girl would fight back. And it never occurred to me NOT to. I believed then, and I believe now, that if I had not fought back, I might well have ended up dead.
