The Waiting Game, Part 2

D.C. Council votes to legalize same-sex marriage.

Not that this vote legalizes same-sex marriage in Washington D.C., mind you. According to the article, there will be a second vote in two weeks. Then the mayor has to sign it. Then, after all that, the bill has to be reviewed by Congress.

But still. Baby steps.

And now on to the second part of the saga, Comcast.

I paid my Comcast bill on 11/27 around 9:30 or so. I like to pay bills early so as to give people in Accounts Receivable five days or so to process the payment.

Despite the five-day provision, Comcast generally gets its payments put through VERY quickly, so I expected the charge to hit my bank account on the next day--Sunday, at the latest. (Yes, my bank processes payments on Sunday.) When nothing had been paid from my bank account by Monday, I was getting a bit concerned.

So I tried to log on to Comcast's pay online section. Whoops--I couldn't do that. "Your account is inaccessible at this time. Please try again later."

This could mean anything from problems on Comcast's end to problems with my account. I was not reassured.

I then tried to call Comcast on the phone. I could get as far as the "For English, press one" menu. Then the line went dead. Twice.

By now, I was seriously thinking that my service was being terminated. I went back to the Comcast website and opted for live chat with a Comcast representative...what they call an adviser. And I ended up with two--Anne and Mark. (I have a transcript of everything that was said.)

It took well over an hour and a half--most of it waiting in the queue--but finally a few things were resolved:

a) I received an e-mail confirmation of my attempt to pay online around 10 in the morning of November 27, so the proof that I tried to pay exists.

b) However, Comcast had shut its systems down over the holiday weekend, so nothing was processed as of Saturday or Sunday. So for three days, no one was going to banks for payments.

c) On Monday, November 30, Comcast was down for systems maintenance. This was what was wrong with the telephones and the website. So for a fourth day, bills STILL weren't being paid.

Mark admitted that it could take several days to process the payment. However, he assured me that my service would not be interrupted and that there would be no late charges.

(I just checked my bank account. The Comcast bill has not been paid yet. However, it is listed as pending, which is a good sign.)

I'd really like to know why all the companies in Connecticut are being so flaming difficult to pay all of a sudden. Is Mercury in retrograde or something?
