I really loved the content of this episode. A LOT. But I didn't like the style of the episode. I hated, okay maybe hate is too strong a word, disliked all of the flashbacks especially how jumbled and out of order they were. I don't want to feel like an idiot while watching Tenn Wolf but I had trouble keeping what was going on straight at first. I enjoyed the episode better when I watched some of it again with the 11 o'clock re-airing.
I don't think the flashback helped with the suspense level. I in no way believed Derek was actually dead. I was curious about why Scott believed he was dead, but the flashback structure didn't help up the suspense, at least not for me. And I'm starting to get Merlin flashbacks, and not necessarily in a good way. I understand that slow motion looks really cinematic and the actors look great, but an over reliance on it can become annoying. I hope TW can cool it with that.
I don't buy Derek going to Jennifer for help. I should probably just be patient and see if they come up with logical explanations for why Derek isn't healing and why he sought her out, but it still annoys me. Derek has humongous trust issues and I don't see him going to a woman, an innocent regular gal, he's met twice for help.
But now, on to the good - really loving Allison's arc this season. She's very multi-layered. She still has a regular teen girl side and can be vulnerable, like when she has trouble threading the needle, but she can also pull herself together and be a total bad-ass by saving Scott twice and by following her own mind when her dad doesn't want to get involved.
Also really love how they're handling Scott and Allison's potential reconciliation. I've always really liked the pairing. But I just really love how they're handling the two of them this season. It's obvious they still care about each other. But neither Scott and Allison are just about their pairing and spending every waking moment thinking and angsting over the other. They have other relationships and other issues they're dealing with and I really like this balanced approach.
Laughed a lot with the episode. Loved the Stiles's barrage of texts to get Danny to do his bidding. Also loved his stand-off with the coach, very much like Dr.Evil and his son Scott's constant "shh" battles. And Dylan O'Brien's evil grin when he comes up with his plan for Jarred was BRILLIANT!
Really starting to like Deaton. Loved how he stood his ground against the Alphas and only agreed to help when Scott was mentioned.
Ugh! That brain squishing, or whatever the hell that was, with Decaulion killing Ennis was so gross! Decaulion is kind of boring though, on the whole. Hope he becomes something other than stereotypical and camp-ish.
I've always heard people talk about how easy it is to multi-ship this show but I never totally got it because I tend to not multi-ship. But this episode was a great example of all of the great relationships on this show and how easy it is to multi-ship. For the most part I still don't multi-ship this show. I love Scott/Stiles, Derek/Scott, Lydia/Allison, Lydia/Stiles but for the most part I love those ships platonically (Scott/Stiles is the only one, depending on the scene, I kind of see differently sometimes.)
I really like Scott/Allison but I think I might have to seriously declare myself a Scott/Isaac shipper. I have just been slammed with feels for those guys in the last two episodes. At the end of the last episode with Isaac dripping wet in Scott's room was like so many porno movies. I wanted to see them make-out, but I still wasn't shipping them. But after last night, I can't help it. Once again Scott is the only one able to reach Isaac when he's freaking out. And I LOVED the looks on everyone else's faces when they saw how Scott was able to get through to Isaac. What I loved even more was Isaac going off because he found out Scott was hurt and the look on his face when he saw Scott and saw he was okay was amazing. I can't necessarily say it was love, but there was such relief there.
And then there was another bedroom scene. How Scott stuck to his plan and didn't jump Isaac's bones with the way he was looking at him while he was standing in that doorway, I can't answer. And going on Tumblr I discovered that TP is half Mexican, so Isaac's "I love Mexican" is even more LOL. God, Jeff Davis really is a troll. :)
Proof that I've gone down the rabbit hole and am totally falling into shipping Scott/Isaac is I've spent far too much time today watching vids, looking up Scott/Isaac stories, and looking for gifs on Tumblr. Daniel Sharman has got to stop (okay don't stop) having Isaac look at Scott as if they're in a cartoon and Scott is a sexy, naked glazed ham. I know it can partially be explained away that Isaac trusts Scott and basically considers Scott his alpha, but it feels much more sexual than that. I don't think this ship will ever truly happen on the show. But I could see a one-sided thing with Isaac, which if that led to fantasy make-out dream sequences, I'd totally be okay with.
