she just wanted him to love her but he didn't

I was browsing the internets on Thursday evening, and randomly decided to see if there were any gigs happening in Norwich soon that would be worth my while attending. Because I've not been to a gig in a while and, quite frankly, I miss them. So, I click away to the Norwich Arts Centre website, and what do I see?

EVAN BLOODY DANDO!!

AT THE BLOODY NORWICH ARTS CENTRE!!

TOMORROW NIGHT!!

The only problem.. I normally work from 1pm to 10pm on a Friday. Poop. I had to ring work and beg to come in early - it was all a bit tedious with one manager having to text another manager who was on the late shift to check that it could be covered and so on. In the end I just turned up an hour and a half early (and did mention that I tried to phone SIX TIMES to check that it was all agreed but was greeted with the engaged tone..). Anyway, it all worked out okay, I got changed at work and got to the Arts Centre at about 8.45.. just in time to see about the last minute of the support act, Frank Turner, who I don't hold in that high regard because he recorded (and I'm assuming still plays it live) a rather lacklustre cover of The Outdoor Type. Thankfully the bit of the song I heard wasn't that one, and to be fair to him, it wasn't that bad. I then stood, waited, and sweated out about 5 litres of fluids, until Evan came on at about 9.30. (It was a tad warm in there.. thank god I'd purchased two cold bottles of mineral water before I left work). He was as always (other than that rotten time in Florida) fabulous. Just him with a Gibson SG and a distortion pedal, and about 30 songs. Oh, and an anecdote about playing the same venue in 1990 and getting their van's windows smashed in by drunken skinheads. Anyway, he was on for just over an hour, and the last song was a cover of Beautiful by Christina Aguilera.

Got home at about 11pm, showered, went on MSN and spoke to my dear friend ('imaginary' - for Sally disconcert ) Chris, discovered he was back in Norfolk for the weekend, and we decided to go and see Evan, again, on Saturday evening because he is playing at Colchester Arts Centre (what is this, the rustic converted former church venues tour?). I finished work at 6pm, met Chris at 7pm and we were at the venue by 8. The setlist was different enough for it to be just as enjoyable as the previous night, and I had a pillar to lean on, which was quite nice given the heat. It was strange being back in Colchester, last time I'd been there was about six years ago. Good gig, good crowd (though there was the ubiquitous request for Mrs Robinson), my not-played-in-Norwich highlights were Into Your Arms and Different Drum - first time I've ever heard Evan play that one live. Got back home at about midnight, stayed up for a while writing most of this, and forgot to click 'post'. Oops. That brings my total Evan/Lemonheads gig count to six, and almost makes up for missing them last Sunday.

(Oh yeah and some other stuff happened like my band did 2 gigs but I'll write about that later because I'm still in the Lemonheads mood right now)

road trippin', gigs, music
