Ok, I'll admit it, I regret not going to Comic-Con. Not enough to jump in a car and go down there, but enough that I will either go to Wonder-Con in February for sure or go to Con next year. Here's the thing: I'm missing all the nifty previews, all the freebies, I missed Hugh Jackman bringing secret footage from the Wolverine movie (that's right fanboys), I'm missing the awesome retail floor, and mosty I'm missing hanging with my friends who are there...but here's what else I'm missing. I am never the coolest person in the room, not even close. As a matter of fact I'm usually the uncoolest person in any room. At Comic-Con, I'm still not the coolest person by far, but at least no one else is either. It makes for a very comfortable environment for nerds like me. I can go ga-ga over the new Watchman trailer, disect it, discuss it, whatever, and no one would fault me for it, because everyone else who saw it would do the same exact damn thing. I can see the new Wonder Woman animated film and clap and cheer, and no one will eye me askance because they're all doing the SAME DAMN THING. I can buy the new Batman After Dark comic and read it carefully (as all comic-book readers do) and place it in a bag with an acid-free backing board, and no one would think I was odd, because they would smack me upside the head if I didn't do that to preserve it (they know the devaluation of finger prints on nice covers). So I'm missing out, I know, and I won't make the same mistakg again. What doesn't help is one of my friends keeps calling me and giving me updates on what I'm missing. I intend to beat him senseless when he returns, 25 years of friendship be damned.
Oh, by the way, the coolest person at Comic-Con every year? Gene Simmons. He's always there, and he's totally cool.
