Needlepoint Cellphone Cases

Hubby Fred and I are old-fashioned geeks: we have caved to the cellphone era, but have the most basic phones available, and we use them for nothing but making phone calls. They're good little phones, and have served us well. Unfortunately, the commercial cases made for them are completely impractical for everyday use, so Fred keeps his loose in his pocket, where it gets rather beat up by his spare change.

I had some needlepoint canvas left over from another project, so I rummaged about in the yarn supply and our phones now each have a protective slipcover.

Mine is designed to be a Farscape comms badge:

Empty:

With phone:

(I put in a cutwork slot at the bottom to make it easy to push the phone out when wanted, and to enable it to connect to the charger while still in the case; in actual practice, I found that the slot really wasn't necessary, so I didn't include one on Fred's case.)

Fred wanted a Batman design, so that he could start calling his phone a Batphone:

Without the slot, it's a fairly easy project; obviously, the size depends on your phone and the stitch-count size of your canvas, so you would need to adapt accordingly:Design was laid out on graph paper, 30 x 80 stitches. Canvas was cut to about 40 x 90 stitches, folding over the excess to provide extra strength at the edges.

After stitching was complete, the finished rectangle was folded in half, and the edges whipstitched in matching yarn, leaving about half an inch unjoined at the top of each side (for ease of access to the phone). I created a faux box bottom on both of these, but I think the pattern would also work fine if you left about a half-inch unjoined at the bottom of each side, too.

A loop of metallic elastic across the top keeps the phone from sliding out, but is easily pushed aside when you actually want to take the phone out.

The Farscape Comms case was done with wool needlepoint yarn, that I had left over from another project. Fred is allergic to wool, so his case was done with plain old acrylic worsted yarn. Basically, you can use whatever works for you.
