I suspect this is only really news to young men. ;)

Risk-taking boys do not get the girls

WHETHER it's driving too fast, bungee-jumping or reckless skateboarding, young men will try almost anything to be noticed by the opposite sex. But a study of attitudes to risk suggests that the only people impressed by their stunts are other men. In the ( Read more... )

I've long suspected that the crazy stuff both sexes do (for women: wear high heels, breast augmentation, etc.) ostensibly to impress each other is really to impress the same sex with how daring/cool/swank/fashionable they are ;)

How this translates to men who date men, women who date women, who knows??

I'm not sure that the methodology of this study is valid. Women claim some things and act in other ways, for instance.

I *do* see cases where risk-taking young men surround themselves in such masculine company that they don't get much opportunity to interact with women...

I was thinking similar thoughts. Self-reported behavior is often poorly correlated to observed. It's also possible that some sub-populations are significantly attracted to such behaviors, but that the trend is cancelled out another subgroup who's averse, or by apathy of the majority.

My experience at least is that there are certain sub-populations who are definitely attracted to risk takers, self-reported preferences notwithstanding, just as there are other subsets who are strongly averse to them. I have also known a very few people who I think had one foot in *each* camp.
