The Magicians- Fun ep!
So the gang is saved from the peril they were in at the end of last ep. Since Marina-40 was killed by a god in the final timeline, and Marina-23 saw all sorts of bad shit, her apartment is warded to shit to protect her from getting killed by super-powerful beings. So lucky for the gang, Margo runs into her on the way up, and she tells her about her defense system.
Get the being to sit on the golden chair in the living room, and then ring the bell on the table, and the sitter will get dosed with a huge bunch of ambrosia, that will knock even a god on their ass. Conveniently, Jennifer-Eliot sits on it while he's pontificating, but since it is wearing Eliot's body, Margo is hesitant. Plus, she realizes just dosing it and them running away isn't a long term plan.
So instead, she reveals the trap to possessed Eliot and makes a deal- she'll lead him to a god, since she just saw Bacchus in Fillory, and they'll use the ambrosia to dose Bacchus instead. In exchange, he'll not kill them. And so Jeliot teleports himself, Margo and Josh to Fillory. Margo tasks Josh with dosing Bacchus, since he trusts Josh. Josh ends up chickening out, so Margo threatens to just dose the entire wine supply for Bacchus' camp, even if it will kill most of them.
Margo is being kinda ruthless here, but its not like they have a choice. Josh thinks they coulda just dosed Jeliot, but then what? I mean, running is just delaying the inevitable. He accuses Margo of prioritizing Eliot over everyone else, which, she is, but its also the best decision they have. They could try to kill him while he's knocked out, because as Josh says, Eliot could be dead already.
But as Margo rightfully points out, since when has direct action ever worked for them anyways. Plus, it could just jump to another body, and they're back to square one.
So Josh does it, and they let Jeliot rip Bacchus' heart out. And by Margo's fairy eye, its like staring into the sun.
Back at the library, Alice is visited by Dean Fogg, who tells her the "great blind spot" has lifted (wait, are they saying he caused it with his spell?) and the Library will be able to read the gang's stories again. So when Alice escapes, she needs to grab their books so the Library won't know what they're doing.
She and Santa get to the exit, but she can't find the books, so she tells Santa to go on without her. So Santa runs off, and she's sneaking around when all of a sudden, she's grabbed from behind.
Now onto the A-plot. So the gang find out from Marina that there's a bounty on their heads, and she was totally going to turn them in. But if they can pay her off, she won't. Luckily, Penny-23 knew a luck discipline guy, and sure enough, Penny-40 knew him too.
They need his help for a heist to get some "Deweys" coins that the Library gives out for magical needs. Now the Mcallisters have a literal carte blanche when it comes to that, so they're going to grab enough Deweys to pay off Marina, pay off Penny's friend Frankie, and have enough left over to protect themselves.
The first part involves Q playing a magical heads up card game. Heh, the final hand, Q purposely casts a spell to use up all the magic in the room. His opponent thinks he's being stupid, but its more so neither of them can cast, and Quentin uses good old fashioned sleight of hand to win.
So to do the actual robbery, Frankie does a luck spell for the gang, but since it has to be a zero-sum thing, for them to have good luck, the bad luck has to go somewhere. And so he creates a bad luck bear someone has to hold and be the subject of incredible bad luck. Julia volunteers to hold it since she's apparently invincible, but whatever she is won't work with that magic. And so its Q.
And its funny at first, until he gets a call from his mom. He doesn't answer it, for fear of it being her telling him his dad died. Which its interesting that he doesn't listen to the voicemail until the end, after he's no longer plagued with bad luck. Like this happened while he had bad luck, so is he hoping if he hears it after all this, the outcome will change? We'll have to wait til next week to find out.
Anyways, there's a hitch or two, but the gang is successful. Only, Kady is still pissed at Marina for killing her mom (even though its not this version of Marina who did that). She wants revenge, despite Penny-23 trying to dissuade her. They do get some coins for themselves just in case, since out of the gang, they seem to be the two most dumped on.
But yeah, after they get back, she volunteers to get rid of the bad luck bear, only she does some magic to I think curse the Deweys they were going to pay Marina off with. And so after the pay off, a mysterious someone "looking for Marina" shows up, and the gang finds Kady at Marina's apartment, which is now hers, along with a free puppy she got.
On the one hand, I'm annoyed, because I like Marina, but on the other, it isn't fair to Kady to always have to sublimate her own needs/desires, like what happened with Penny. Hopefully Marina-23 isn't dead.
