TV commentary:

Glee- Great episode tonight! Biggest surprise, Mike Chang finally singing ("Sing!" didn't count, he was mostly speaking in that). Sure, his storyline was kinda prosaic, with him getting an A-, and his father up in arms over such a supposedly poor performance and wanting him to quit all this frivolous singing and dancing and focusing on academics. But it was still well executed. And I liked the sequence in the dance room, with the imaginary versions of his father and Tina. The Mike/Tina relationship was always just there, all, hey, they're both Asian, and together, and I feel this was the first time they put some emotional impact into it. Though heh, the imaginary version of his father did have a point with having to worry about injury. Particularly since Mike is a football player.! Though how is he not considered like a god at that school? I mean, I think girls consider him attractive (he certainly comes from good genes, judging by his parents!), he's a star football player, honor student, dancing king, he friggin does it all! And aw, that scene with him and his mom was so sweet, particularly when he offered to teach her to dance.

Plot B involved Mercedes. She's upset because she's always being overlooked for Rachel. At the same time, Schue has a point. Rachel neurotically works hard to get where she is. Mercedes has talent, but she doesn't practice, just expects to have accolades lauded on her. Also, even though Mercedes may have sounded better on that one song (frankly, I couldn't tell), she would totally be wrong for the part! Rachel is the Broadway girl, WSS isn't Mercedes style. Glad the story didn't end with them vilifying Rachel (well it still sort of did, but for something else altogether!). Though it did make Mercedes look like kinda a bitch. The committee tries to make them both happy by holding the musical for an extra week so they both have a chance to play Maria. But then she's all, "Did you double cast any of the other roles?" Well, because the other roles didn't have two talented people both vying for them! And really, what the eff with Mercedes being all, "Why is everyone so afraid to hurt Rachel's feelings?" People frickin' treat Rach like shit to her effin face! I don't think anyone tries to not hurt her feelings!

Of course, you knew how this storyline would end once Shelby complained about not getting anyone joining her choir. Though I'm not sure how her choir would actually work. Wasn't she given the position by Sugar's dad to make her the front and center star? So how would Mercedes get to shine there anyways? Plus, wouldn't Sugar ruin all their numbers, unless Shelby somehow turned her around? (Which would be a little BS, why can't Sugar just stay a bad singer?)

Plot C felt kinda tacked on, despite how emotional it was. We finally know why Emma is messed up like she is, because her parents (played by Ralph Malph and crazy Sandy Cooper from Wings) are Ginger Supremacists who constantly harped on her, turning her into the OC freak she is today. I think it would've been better if they gave it more time. As it was they tried to put too many things into the episode at once.

But ha, as Blaine said, "just when I expect you to zig, you go and zag!" First, Santana's back in the club, no problem. (Then again, so was Quinn, despite not even apologizing for her crappy behavior!). Even though we didn't see her audition, I'm glad the WSS cast listing had her getting a role, because it would make no friggin sense whatsoever if the friggin Hispanic girl did not get role in friggin West Side Story. And then, despite how last week ended, Kurt was cool with Blaine getting Tony. And then when Rach was worried Mercedes beat her, they made you think she was gonna do something to ruin Mercedes chances, but no, she put her hat in for student body president. Which actually doesn't make sense, because really, after that Brit number, how the hell does Kurt have a chance of winning, so what's the point of Rach running either?! At least people like Kurt, isn't Rachel supposed to be the school pariah?! Who the hell is gonna vote for her? Even Finn is undecided, because now he's caught between his gf and his step-brother!

I mentioned liking the "Run the World" number in a previous post, but that Dreamgirls number was pretty good too. The 60s fashions were amusing, and it showcased a lot of the cast.

And argh, no new eps until November? Looks like we'll be getting Aguilera's "Candyman" and "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry? And OMG, are they gonna hook up Puck and Shelby?! That is wrong on so many levels, the biggest reason being she's the mother of one of his ex-girlfriends, who adopted his daughter with another ex!

You know, I think New Girl pairs well with Glee, particularly since Jess likes to sing and dance to classic 80s and 90s songs, which is totally awesome.
