Up All Night

Jul 12, 2008 01:01

Well, I tried to go to sleep an hour ago, to no avail.  I turned the light back on and finished the last 40 pages or so of Married Lovers, Jackie Collins' latest.  It wasn't my favorite of hers, but it wasn't' her worst either.  That dubious distinction would go to Thrill(1997, I think).  Unlike most of her novels where there is a strong female protagonist, heroine, Thrill featured Laura Ivory, who was a bit of a wimp and a victim.  The kick ass female characters in her books are one of the big draws for me.  Lucky Santangelo will forever be one of my favorite female characters. My favorite Jackie novel is probably Hollywood Husbands, because it really threw me a total "WTF" moment at the end...in a good way. I met her at Davis Kidd in Nashville back when Vendetta came out. I simply ADORED her. I think I have posted this pic before(I'm too lazy to search the archives, though), but I told Marika, I'd dig it up after her post about riding the elevator with the lady. =0)

Upon finishing the book, I once again turned the light off and tried to fall asleep. Again, no luck.  After fifteen minutes of laying there staring into the darkness, I got up and hauled my butt out here to the computer. I should be sleepy.  We were quite busy at the store tonight and it was a longer shift than usual. I even fell asleep during the first  Fraiser episode on Lifetime tonight. I should have gone to bed then. Oh well, I would have  starte dreading the last 80 or so pages of the Julie Smith book I put down to read jackie, but ti is in the car and the car is at the shop.  I'm going to drive by tomorrow and if it is not in the bay, I'll pick up my book. (Robby's closed on Saturday) if I can't getit, I'll dive into some short stories over the weekend.  I haven't read everything in New Orleans Noir yet, nor have I finished all the pieces in Love, Bourbon Street.  I generally use short works like that for fill-ins, between books or on nights when I don't have time to invest in a novel, but want to read a little something before bed. Once I finish the Julie Smith book, I'll dive into Leslie Jordan's My Trip Down the Pink Carpet. Venusunfolding gave it a wonderful review last month and I can't wait to read it. I have a doctor's appointment this Thursday to follow up on some recent bloodwork, so I'll probaly get quite a bit of reading done then. Once I finish MTDPC, I should be able to get at least two, maybe three, more done before shcool starts in August.  I'd like to at least do Michael Thomas Ford's Full Circle.

Later today(since it is technically Saturday), I have to go to the funeral home with Mom.  A woman we have known since I was four  passed away yesterday. They used to be neighbors back then.  Her nephew as my best friend senoir year of high school and early college. Mabel's husband, Tom, was one of my favorite people when I was little.  He drove the church bus anad always had candy for us. That's how we met them. They invited us to church one Sunday back in 1970.  I was four and Kenneth was one. Mom and I still go to that same church today, thirty eight years later. Mabel and Tom eventually moved out  to the country and joined a church closer to their new home. Mom has stayed in touch with their daughters off and on through the years and, as I said, I was best friends with their nephew, Earl, way back when.  When I first started college I spent almost as much time at his house as I did my own. His mom(Mabel's sister) was definitely a second Mom to me. Mom doesn't do funerals very well since Dad died, almost eight years ago, so, unless it is a special circumstance, we generally only go to the visitations.

Even with my car woes, this has turned out to be a very pleasant week. I got some positive confirmation about something I had been fretting about and it just made my week. I got in some extra hours at the store, as we have two people on vacation this week; so that will help with the car work. Even tonight at work, when I went on my dinner break, I was pleasantly surprised by an unexpected text message, just letting me know I was being thought about. Now, if only Robby will tell me that the car repair is minimal and won't cost much, I'll be in hog heaven. I just hope he calls Monday before I have to go to class in Tennessee.  I'd hate to have to drive my brother's SUV with these gas prices!!!! He's a little behind because he fired all of his lazyass help a few weeks ago and hasn't bothered to hire anyone new yet.  Probably due to his castrating bitch of a wife, who runs the business end of the place.

Well, I have bored ya'll enough with my insomniatic rambling.  Have a great weekend.

car, work, church, books
