Camelot faces a new golden age, but even as the city flowers, the dark seeds of destruction are being sown. In the frozen wastelands of the north, men are disappearing without a trace. During a Q&A at last week's press launch for Series 5 of Merlin, attended by CultBox, the show’s producers discussed the changes to the character of Guinevere following her rise from maid to queen.
“Queen at last!” executive producer Bethan Jones exclaimed, to actress Angel Coulby (Gwen). “You get a frock! Doesn’t she look stunning? It’s absolutely amazing. To rival Morgana! She’s really evolved, hasn’t she, as a character.”
“Yeah, absolutely,” Coulby agreed. “She’s obviously come a massively long way, but I think in this series you sort of see her proving herself as a very worthy queen.”
“She’s very much in command,” Jones added. “Yeah,” nodded Coulby, “when she’s left to her own devices, she copes pretty well.”
“The interesting thing is, we’ve given Gwen, in this series, especially in the first two-parter, a very very difficult decision to make,” pointed out executive producer and series co-creator Johnny Capps. “I think that felt like we were marking a change of how Gwen has become queen and stepped into that role very well...”
