I think that's pretty much the established ratings we can expect... more or less. Not too bad, but definitely not up to their expectations.

I'm pretty sure the ratings are not up to their expectations at all. I'm also convinced they wouldn't have renewed the show if they'd had a 'plan B' for 2014.

Yeah, I read your comment in the other post and I totally agree about the whole lacking of a plan B: it does make a lot of sense.
Do you by any chance remember about Robin Hood's ratings? Do you think they can be compared to these?

The thing is: their plan (or rather lack of plan B) could've worked. Or at least worked better. If the J's had taken any of the slightly more critical Merlin reviews more serious (did they even read any reviews???), maybe they could've learned a lesson or two about what to do better and what people actually liked about the show.

IMO the J's never fully understood what made Merlin so succesfull and LOVED. Fandom and the general audience put up with the show's weaknesses for so long because they made us love the characters during the first (two) series. Basically no one loved the show because of fart jokes, troll sex, CGI shenanigans (something the J's still think makes an awesome show) or the show turning ~darker~ every year. We loved the show because we loved the characters. Even those they managed to butcher with OTT behaviour in later series. And let's not even speak of the Merlin cast. They were all amazing (they still are, obviously). OR BRADLEY'S AND COLIN'S HOT-LIKE-BURNING-LET'S-JUST-EYE-FUCK-24/7 CHEMISTRY ON AND OFF SCREEN ( ... )

I never saw Robin Hood, but I think it's funny how audiences break into two camps, those are the Game of Thrones type, who love to be devastated when their latest favorite character is killed off, i.e., they're in it for the emotional ride, and those for whom death of a favorite character is kind of like the end of a show.
I'm firmly in the second camp, and that's why my favorite seasons of Merlin were the first and second ones. It was the period when they were really focusing on the characters and not so much on trying to create this mythic dark and tragic legend, which in my opinion they were not 100% successful in doing.
As for Atlantis, the producers are trying to recreate the same phenomenon, but without some essentials: Colin Morgan, Colin Morgan's chemistry with Bradley James, Colin Morgan, fantastic cast including the talented Angel Coulby, Richard Wilson and the always-fun-to-watch Anthony Head, Colin Morgan, a really beautiful Morgana, a couple of fun dragons, and Colin Morgan.

Atlantis so far is very flat and does not have a core story/trick/plot/relationshi to capture the audience. Not sure if audience will stick for it for a very long time. But I do like Jason chest. If lesson learned by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, I think they remember to show male lead's hairy chest as often as possible. Well, not that I am complaining on this single point.

The thing about Robin Hood is that the first two series were actually good. I felt it was refreshing to have Marian as someone almost like Xena. Able to stand up for herself and not simply a 'screamer'/damsel in distress. Better still as Carrie Fisher summed up Princess Leia, 'she was a distressing damsel not a damsel in distress'.

When Robin Hood S3 came on, I did like it. But then the whole thing went downhill and I stopped watching. I think one of the main reasons it was axed as the stories were just stupid and killing Marian off was a mistake. As for Atlantis, although he seems to have 'forgotten' he's from the 21st Century, perhaps they are trying a twist like 'Life on Mars'. That is to say Jason is dead and he's imagining all the events. Just my two pence on the matter.
