Jim sat on his bed and looked across the room watching as Bones packed up his things for transfer up to the Enterprise. He'd never been one to hesitate before, but he wasn't sure how Bones would respond to the offer he wanted to make. He had looked before leaping this time, unfortunately there seemed to be fog obscuring the landing. He looked down at the memory stick in his hands. Time to make a leap of faith and hope Bones will decide to jump with him.

“Hey Bones, stop that and come here for a second.” He knew that he probably didn't look anywhere near as confident as he would like. When Bones looked up and immediately dropped what he was doing he figured he probably looked closer to sick than anything else.

“Are you alright Jim? You don't look so good.” Even as he was speaking he was taking his pulse, checking for a fever, and turning to look for his tricorder.

Jim caught his hand. “Fuck, Bones stop I'm alright. I just need to talk to you for a second. I'm nervous not sick.”

Bones laughed. “What could you possibly be so nervous to talk about with me? Nothing has ever been off limits to you.”

“I've never been about to ask you to marry me before.” Jim braced himself - trying to prepare for not taking Bones initial reaction to heart.

Fortunately it wasn't all that bad.  Bones just went really still and said spoke very quietly. “That's not funny Jim. You know why that isn't possible.”

“Because you plan to leave me in ten years when it becomes obvious that you aren't aging?” Now for the hard part and the reaction he couldn't predict. “I have an answer for that. I'm just not sure if it's one you want.”

“There is no good answer Jim.” At this Bones seemed to almost radiate sadness. “There are only compromises that won't work for long. Makeup has it's issues. As for you leaving Starfleet to come with me... I couldn't do that to you. You were made for this life.”

“This is different. I've been working on something for the last few months.” Jim paused, his expression pleading Bones to hear him out. “I finished it a couple of weeks ago and I had Scotty double check me. He doesn't know exactly what it's for, only enough to confirm that it will work.”

Jim held out the memory stick that he hoped would help get him the answer he needed. “This is a program for a transporter. You plug it in and upload the program, set the transporter for a site to site from one pad to another. The program will isolate the 24th chromosome pair and withhold it from the materialization process. It's one use only and then it will delete itself from the system.”

Jim took a deep breath before continuing. “After that you will just be Dr. Leonard Horatio McCoy regular human. That's the man I'm hoping to spend a lifetime with.”

When Bones just stared at him his nerves got the best of him and he defaulted to humorous babble. “It's not a deal breaker you know. It's for you if you want me or not. If you don't want it, I still want you regar-” Jim had to stop speaking then because Bones had finally reacted.

By throwing him flat on the bed, climbing on top of him and kissing him senseless. Bones lifted himself up only long enough to take the memory stick out of Jim's hand and carefully place it out of harms way. He settled himself back down, pinning Jim's hands above his head to hold him in place.

Bones looked down at Jim and smirked. “Jim, I have to tell you that you have managed to get yourself into one hell of a tight spot. I am never gonna let you go now.”

Jim just grinned and decided he didn't need to tell Bones. That was his plan all along.
