I have never watched an episode of this show. Knowing it has been on for many years I figure I have too much to catch up to enjoy it/get anything from it. Soooo - what season/year can I start at that I will actually be able to follow the show in your opinion?
That's not an easy one to answer; if you want to watch the new versions, start with the Christopher Ecclestone era, from 2005. Of course, before then, there was also the Paul McGann feature length special in 1996, and the show ran from something like 1963 to 1989.
With the new episodes, it is a good idea to watch them in chromnological order because of all the plot threads that run through the series, but older episodes are well worth a look - for example "Genesis of the Daleks" with Tom Baker, from the 1970s. The old format was always to have one story in about 4-6 parts, but I've found with old Doctor Who episodes you can just dip into any story.
So - I'd recommend giving the new ones a go starting from 2005, but watch out for older ones too, although some of the 1970s ones are INCREDIBLY cheesy (in one story, the Doctor runs away from what is obviously a miniature dinosaur/loch ness monster).
