A to Z of Romance (Mulder/Scully), Part 22 of 26: V for Violin - Rating: PG-13

See behind the cut. I'm not entirely satisfied and will probably have to clean it up somewhat, but this is my initial draft.

Summary: Mulder has a surprise for Scully, but things don't go quite as planned.

Mulder had made his excuse to leave the apartment; as far as Scully was concerned, she was working out at the local gym; she was pleased that he was taking the idea of fitness seriously.

In fact, Mulder had been very devious, by buying himself a violin and taking lessons; while he was attending the gym once a week, he was also using his gym locker to hide his violin from Scully. Two hours at the gym, as Scully believed, was actually one hour at the gym and one hour learning to play. It was expensive, but Mulder was certain it would be worth the effort, as he’d thought of his idea of V for Violin several weeks ago. Scully and he were now living alone because Carlos had finally moved out to live with his girlfriend - the timing could not have been better.

As he stood underneath the balcony of their flat, he quickly texted Scully: “Come to the window”, and began to play.

Mulder played furiously at the violin for five minutes; no sign of Scully. “Hasn’t she even heard me?” he wondered. He gradually increased the tempo of his music; he was glad that all the money spent on this was worth it - it was difficult to explain to Scully where all the money was going. After another five minutes, he was startled by the sudden appearance of one of the neighbours, who promptly smashed the violin.

Scully was meanwhile enjoying a good night out with Henry and Laura at their flat; the two of them had invited her around since she seemed to be on her own; she had left a note for Mulder, saying where she was, and that he was invited around after he left the gym - if he felt like it; she hadn’t even noticed that she left her mobile in the flat. She could have sworn she heard the sound of a violin coming from a short distance away, but she dismissed this as her imagination.

The evening was going well until Laura suddenly commented: “Can you hear shouting outside?”

The three of them went silent - they could hear mens’ voices nearby, and they sounded angry.

“This is usually a peaceful neighbourhood”, Scully commented. Henry was rushing over to the window to look. “It’s a fight”, he remarked, stating what his female companions had already guessed.

Scully walked over to the window and looked out; she could make out two men arguing and throwing punches - and they were right outside the entrance to her flat.

“I’m not sure I fancy walking back to our place alone” she said; “Wait a minute”. She had suddenly recognised one of the men fighting.

“Are you okay, Dana?”, Laura asked, seeing her shocked look.

“I have to go”, Scully said. “One of the guys is Mulder”. She dashed out of the flat and hurried down the street. If she possessed any super power, it was recognising her partner from a block away.

“Mulder, what the hell?” she demanded, grabbing her partner.

“Oh, so getting your fluzie to help you out?” shouted the neighbour.

“He broke my violin, Scully!”

Scully did not stop to question the whole “violin” story; she stared at the neighbour.

“Your idiot boyfriend was disturbing the peace!” replied the neighbour.

Scully punched him in the face. “Fluzie, indeed?” she scowled. “Come on, Mulder!”. She practically dragged her partner inside, just as they heard the police sirens in the distance.

When they were finally in the apartment, Scully could do nothing but stare at Mulder. “First of all, what the hell were you doing with a violin?” she demanded.

“It was meant to be a surprise, Scully - I was going to serenade you!”

“You sure did - with your shouting; what will the neighbours think?”

Mulder looked sheepish; “I thought you were in.”

“Wait a minute - this was your choice for the letter V - Violin? Why didn’t you just say V for violence?”

Mulder used his last resort - he turned on the sad puppy dog eyes; it was Scully’s biggest weakness, and it worked.

“I suppose it was a nice gesture”, she said.

They where interrupted by a furious banging on the door. “I know you’re in there!” came the neighbour’s voice; he had evidently also evaded the police. Scully sighed: “I’ll deal with this. Don’t even think of it”.

Mulder was genuinely nervous as Scully strode towards the door, but he had to hand it to her, she has a way with words, and within half an hour she had forced Mulder and the neighbour to make their peace; they looked like two misbehaving children being scolded by their mother.

When the neighbour finally left, Mulder gave Scully a big hug: “You are amazing”.

“Thank you”, said Scully “but you’re still sleeping on the couch tonight”.

Around three in the morning, however, she got out of the bed and joined Mulder on the couch.
