Okay, so here I am. Finally entering the blogosphere. I've always wanted to start a blog, but I never felt like I had something to write about. Well, about a month ago, I decided to change my entire life direction and join the Navy. The decision didn't come quick... they usually don't. Whenever I think I want to do something, I obsess over it for weeks. I've been reading Navy blogs pretty much since the idea to join hit me. I love them. I can't get enough. Thus, I've decided to give back and start my first blog ever - chronicleing (sp?) my journey into the armed forces.
So, here I am... I've completed my application to become a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer ("SWO(N)"). The application process has been long and tedious. I have to get a secret security clearance, which meant I had to drudge up a bunch of info regarding schools attended (6 of them), places lived (dozens), jobs worked (dozens) for the past 10 years of my life. But, it's done! Woohoo!
Next steps. I have a VIP trip scheduled for February 19th. The Navy is flying me down to Jacksonville, FL to tour some subs and carriers. After this trip, I'll hit MEPS (Medical exams) and do my PRT (Physical Readiness test). The minimums for PRT are 55 Push Ups, 46? Sit ups, and a 12:43 1.5 mile. So far I'm at 60 push ups, 70+ sit ups, and a 12:00 1.5mile. So, I think I'm good there. I'm a little worried about MEPS. I have an amblyopia (lazy eye) which affects the vision in my right eye. I'm not sure yet if it will disqualify me. Cross your fingers... Assuming anyone is reading this. :)
That's all!
Oh, and a side note... How I came up with my username - Gavle Goat. My nickname is Billy. Kids used to torment me calling me Billy Goat, so I decided to own it, referring to myself as Billy Goat. Unfortunately Billy Goat was taken on Live Journal. So, while researching goats, I came across the legendary Gavle Goat. It's quite an interesting story and I encourage all of you to Wikipedia it. In short, every year, vandals destroy the goat, and every year, the people rebuild the goat. I liked the persistance. Plus, there's that whole, rising from the ashes anew thing.
On a side side note... I was also born the year of the "Earth Sheep," which is also called the "Earth Goat." I guess goat's have just been a theme of my life. Plus, I eat almost anything. Not tin cans, like real goats, but just about anything else.
That's all (for real this time)!
