Moon Over Soho by
Ben Aaronovitch My rating:
4 of 5 stars This is the second book in the Rivers of London series. I couldn't remember a lot about the events of the previous book, although some are mentioned again, but I found myself getting into the book, and its quirky setting, with its mixture of fantasy and real-life London (there are lots of references to real-life chain stores scattered throughout the book, which add to the sense of blending the mundane with the bizarre.
In this book, jazz singers are suddenly dying, and it starts to look like murder. Murder by magic to be precise, and this book starts to introduce "jazz vampires" as well as black magic. It also introduces a new relationship for the narrator Peter, who falls in love with a woman called Simone.
I enjoyed this book better than the first one, being more familiar with the narrative style, and its occasionally dense descriptions of its setting. It also sets up a couple of plot threads that will presumably be developed in future titles; one involving the character Lesley, and also a villain who is very likely to return. I'm definitely going to keep reading.
