Pride (2014)

Jul 17, 2021 21:46

Another one for the ohnotheydidnt July film challenge, it has a Queen song ("I Want to Break Free") and two actors who have appeared in Harry Potter films (Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton).

The plot is about gay rights activists who show their support for another oppressed group: the miners. Because this is set in 1984, there is a lot of 1980s politics, and references to Thatcherism.

The film was at times hilariously funny, and at times very sad, particularly seeing George McKay's relationship with his parents. I was also interested to see that they had what was evidently a mock-up of Bloomsbury's "Gay's the Word" bookshop.

Overall, this just felt like a feel-good film, really, and despite the fact that it was full of side characters with nasty, homophobic attitudes, it showed that tolerance wins out over all.
