Yet another day at the office.
The procedure I mentioned yesterday was fairly gruesome - brutal, inelegant, and extremely gory. But the attending performing the abortion was really great. As she would pull out the various pieces of the fetus, she would point out the serious physical anomalies that were present, even at this stage of development - rocker bottom feet, limb deformaties, etc. Not to mention that it pretty much would never develop lungs. Also, watching the doctor counsel the patient and aid her during her period of grief & guilt was inspiring.
Honestly, I was more disturbed today in clinic at the 16 year old pregnant girl who got her 3rd STD during pregnancy and still maintained a distressingly cavalier attitude towards using a barrier protection method during sex.
The first mother chose to terminate her unborn child out of love for the child. During the pre-op counseling visit, she constantly was concerned about whether the fetus would suffer. The second mother is continuing with her pregnancy, but obviously not due to any love for the child. Rather, the pregnancy is continuing despite her selfishness. It was day of stark, and bleakly ironic contrasts.
