I managed to survive my first week of rotations... barely.
I was told by many of my upper class friends that the last week will probably one of the, if not the most intense week I will experience all year. Not only is the rotation (OB/GYN) one of the most intense rotations, the site I'm doing it at is the most hardcore, and the service I was on (Gynecology Oncology) was run by a hard-as-nails attending. So much so that I heard through the grapevine that the department had a meeting with her to address complaints previous residents had lodged against her. Seriously, after last week, I'm ready for anything!
Tomorrow will definitely be a challenging day, emotionally, I think. I will be scrubbing in on a fairly unusual case - a 22-week gestation abortion. It is for very legitimate medical reasons (serious fetal anomaly - if the baby is carried to term, it will live a brief and excruciatingly painful life), but it pushes the extreme upper time limits of when an abortion can be performed. I've always been very pro-choice but that won't make it any easier to watch what gets taken out. We'll see how that goes.
