You can call me Crap Shooter....

or not.

This afternoon was awesome. I was picked up from the apartment by my Dad, and instead of going straight home we took a detour to the Tulalip Casino. Now, I've never been to a casino before, so this is pretty exciting. My Dad gives me $40, says he'll use $40, and we'll see which of us loses it all first. We walk in and I cash one of my $20's in for a ticket to play video slots and such. First up, video poker. I do alright, after about 30 minutes that $20 has turned into $40. Next we go to the video slot machines. $40 goes back down to $20. My next move: try my hand at more video poker...after a power struggle between me and the machine, I lose all but 4 cents. So, Dad and I decide to take our remaining $20, pool it, and go to the craps table. I've never played craps before, and we were at the table all of 60 seconds before the dice were given to me and I was told to roll. I pick up the dice, and the pit manager shouts at me- I had tried to pick up the dice with two hands, and a person can palm a die and switch it out with a loaded one. I apologize, explain that this is my first time playing, and the dealers there all laugh and make remarks like "well, that's obvious," and "God, you're just a big stupid fatty, aren't you." Kinda hurtful, but I know they're just trying to break my concentration. So I throw. and throw. and throw. My Dad's making the bets behind me, saying, "Put $10 on 6! Greg, throw a 6." So I do. This continues for about 30 minutes, and I must have rolled about 40 times, getting what we needed when we needed. The guys around me are betting things like $100 on my rolls, and are getting double what's coming to them. I know for a fact that the guy next to me had made at least $1000 off of my rolls. Dad and I played it pretty close to the chest, but when I finally rolled a 7 at the wrong time (that's the way a turn is ended) we walked away with $167! I won us nearly $130! After cashing in we split our winnings pretty much down the middle. It was great knowing I won that scratch on my own accord, and the only thing determining the outcome were the two die I had in my hand, no computers or slots.
Some of you may say, "Well Greg, that's beginners luck." Bullshit. THAT is what comes from playing Munchkin and (more recently) D&D. I've been dealing with dice for quite a while now, and I knew the moment I chose the dice they were going to roll for me. It was that tingle you sometimes get when you sift the dice in your hand and it just feels right. Like just when you've unlocked a padlock and you hear the *click* as the last number falls into place. You know that impasse is no longer a threat, it's been defeated. Now imagine that feeling, that noise and vibration in your hand. In a word, it was good.
