WHO: Yoruichi Shihouin, Soi Fong
WHEN: June 12, 2006
WHERE: Karakura Town
WHAT: A Game of Catch the Kitty.
WATCH FOR: Yoruichi getting owned.

For the first time in many many weeks, Karakura Town is mostly quiet. By quiet, it means no Hollows, Demons, or people with the ability to enslave Hollows. Yoruichi is prowling about in her cat form as usual. These days, it seems she is never in her human form unless forced to for one reason or another. The cat yawns for a moment before settling on a fence somewhere overlooking a wide ribbon of water as the dying sun reflects hues or red, orange and gold.

"Soi Fong." The cat woman doesn’t even bother to look around.

If you want to get better at anything, it takes practice -- it's common sense really. But Soi Fong's always been of the opinion that sense is something most people are severely lacking, and therefore not as common as its name implies. Of course there are also exceptions to the practice rule, those who seemed born with skills or talents that needed little work in perfecting. Yoruichi-sama, for example, seemed born to be the Goddess of Flash.

Soi Fong was born to practice. There isn't a sound to her movements as she ducks down and thrusts one hand forward to strike an invisible midsection. She turns as she's rising, spinning to aim a high kick to the nothingness behind her. The way her limbs move and braids flow around her, Soi Fong could just as easily have been a dancer. But the Fong clan had no need for dancers. And it's doubtful Yoruichi needs one either. But whatever the request, all it takes is saying Soi Fong's name to make her abandon the imaginary combat and bring her there in a literal heartbeat. Soi Fong kneels down on one knee with her fist pressed against the ground. "Yes, Yoruichi-sama?"

Yoruichi chuckles lightly. She’ll never get her young protégé to break out of the habit will she? Ah well. "Always practicing," the cat gently chides. “Have you ever taken a day off since you became Captain Soi Fong?” She turns herself around to regard the younger woman with a smile, “It might do you some good.”

Old habits do die hard! But it's more like a way of life for Soi Fong, not something as simple and meaningless as biting your nails or chewing gum. She feels a little warmth in her face as Yoruichi mock-scolds her. Day...off? Do those words even have meaning to her? "Wouldn't that set a bad example, Yoruichi-sama?" If she starts taking days off, then her men will want days off. If they start slacking and make Soi Fong look bad, it makes Yoruichi look bad by default. For a century she trained to become stronger than her idol. Now she trains to bring a measure of glory back to her. She blinks when she's told that a day off might do her some good. Soi Fong's eyes lift hesitantly in the cat's direction. "...How so Yoruichi-sama?" If she thinks it's so then Soi Fong's all ears!

Now Soi Fong isn’t Byakuya or Yoruichi would have offered a game of tag. The girl certainly is good enough to give her a run for the money though. "You can’t learn everything through training alone. Sometimes you just need to let yourself go in order to reach the next level." The former captain snickers a little, "I am sure your men relax a bit when you’re not watching Little Bee." Especially that slob of a vice-captain. But Yoruichi says nothing about him, more amused than anything that he’d get paired up with her ever so serious friend.

She gets to her feet, stretching out a little, "Let’s have a little wager shall we?"

Yoruichi's speed was the one thing Soi Fong doesn't think she'd ever be able to match no matter how much she practiced. It had been a sore spot for her in the past too. The cat's words get even more of Soi Fong's attention. There's a way to get to the next level that she didn't know about? And that way was by letting go? Soi Fong rises to her feet slowly, the frown on her lips one of concentration rather than bitterness. She probably blushes again when she's called by that old nickname too. She knows she's right though. Even the best of her men don't live for their responsibilities the way that she does. "Of course." Soi Fong nods quickly to the suggestion of a wager. The prospect of competition excites her a bit. Maybe Soi Fong will win and impress her! If there's a better reward than words of praise from your hero, Soi Fong can't imagine it. "What shall it be Yoruichi-sama?"

"If you can catch me in thirty minutes time Soi Fong, I will do whatever you want for a day." Yoruichi looks a bit smug, "And if I win... you must purchase ten gallons of milk for me." Of course Yoruichi has absolutely no intentions of losing. "To make things a little more interesting, I will stay like this. What do you say?"

Blink. Thirty minutes sounds like an eternity to Soi Fong when it comes to most things. She could probably take out any number of lesser skilled idiots in that amount of time. But playing tag with Yoruichi...that's more than a challenge, that borders on the impossible! But in that form it might be a little easier. It doesn't really matter though, Soi Fong isn't about to back down. Her eyes narrow as she starts to focus. It's hard to believe she was that blushing, sheepish girl just moments before. But that was the face that only Yoruichi knew. Now is that determined, intimidating expression that all others see...lucky them. "Ready, Yoruichi-sama." She nods, accepting those terms without complaint.
What would she want if she won? The important thing is to win first.

"Good! Now catch me if you can." With a smirk, Yoruich takes off in a familiar blur. Even as a cat, she is still completely capable of shunpo. The only problem is that her cat form can’t take her nearly as for nor for as long consecutively when compared to her human form. Silly endurance. If humans notice this blur of a cat, they seem to be ignoring it. Mostly for their own good. Seeing a blinking in and out of sight would be too mind boggling.

Soi Fong feels her muscles tensing, her own form blurring just a second behind Yoruichi. Whether anyone else sees the cat or not, her own eyes follow her. It's just catching up to her that's the problem! Faster. Soi Fong re-appears for the blink of an eye before taking another step. Go! She's keeping up with Yoruichi better than she normally would though. The Little Bee is already starting to think she has a chance! It's too soon to get cocky though.

Yoruichi laughs as she feels fingertips brushing her fur. Soi Fong has certainly improved. But she knew this when she fought against her earlier. In one of the brief moments Yoruichi is following the normal rules of physics, she shouts over her shoulder. "Almost Soi Fong! But you’ll have to try harder than that to catch me." Her golden eyes twinkle and she’s gone again, dashing down some narrow alleyway.

It takes Soi Fong a moment to recognize the sound of Yoruichi's laughter. It's certainly a sound that could make her falter. Doesn't laughter mean happiness? Maybe Soi Fong doesn't really know as rare a thing as it is for her. Her expression does brighten though, a sparking coming to her eyes as the cat challenges her even more. Soi Fong pauses between steps to catch her breath, though it's mostly from excitement rather than fatigue at this point. "Right!" She nods firmly turning down that same alleyway. Maybe it'll have a dead end! Or maybe Soi Fong will be the one forced to slow down if some tom cat gets the wrong idea!

Another close one! Soi Fong almost gets her this time, but Yoruichi is able to escape at the last moment by jumping up onto the high cement wall at the end of the alley. She darts over it and keeps running, in someone’s private yard by this point. The chase will take them all over Karakura if Soi Fong doesn’t catch her first. At this point, Yoruichi is really just having fun. She has her pride to uphold and doesn’t want to get caught, but at the same time, it’s been a while since she’s been -this- carefree with anyone other than Urahara.

Is Yoruichi going easy on her? The thought occurs to Soi Fong as she continues to close the gap. The corners of her lips turn downwards at the idea. She wants to win fair and square! She has her pride to consider as well, and that's the only way it would have any real meaning to her. Maybe she needs to make Yoruichi take her more seriously and acknowledge her talents again. Soi Fong shimmers into sight, only to blur once more as she makes a leap up onto the wall. There's a quick scan to see where the cat went before she resumes her pursuit, urging herself forward even more than before.

Yoruichi is certainly not taking it easy! In fact, she’s cursing softly under her breath as each attempt gets progressively closer to the end goal. They’ve been running now for nearly twelve minutes. It’s a good thing she proposed a 30 minute time limit. The cat’s body would not be able to sustain much longer at this pace. She slips out of the young captain’s grasp, "I see you’ve been practicing Soi Fong!" The catwoman spares a glance and some breath for the bee. "But you haven’t caught me yet!" Now it’s a chase along the fences that separate the houses from the street.

Yoruichi's not the only one who's starting to wear down. Even twelve minutes is a long time but so far Soi Fong's encouraged by how well she's doing. Her sheer determination will fuel her for a little longer. There's an almost guilty expression on Soi Fong's face at the comment that she's been practicing. That's the reason this game started in the first place! But Soi Fong probably is working harder now than she does when practicing alone. Maybe Yoruichi has a point about 'all work and no play'. "Yes Yoruichi-sama!" The bee acknowledges before leaping up onto the fence after her.

The cat almost tumbles off the fence at Soi Fong’s unexpected movements, but quick wits and even quicker reflexes keeps her on her feet as she lands. She pants softly, dashing around a corner. Either Soi Fong -is- getting better or she’s entirely too rusty. Or it’s a combination of both. This puts Yoruichi into a somewhat thoughtful mood.

Soi Fong 's concentration shifts from the wager to Yoruichi's near-tumble. But she just proves that a cat really does always land on its feet! Her speed is leveling out, past its peak and will undoubtedly start going downhill from there. Her entire body feels tired and weak, evidenced by her own stumble along the fence that forces Soi Fong to the ground. She won't disgrace either of them by suggesting or even thinking about calling the bet off. If she'd already lost sight of the cat completely, Soi Fong would continue to chase after her for the full thirty minutes.

Yoruichi spares a look behind her as she sees Soi Fong stumble, "Giving up already Little Bee?" She makes it sound and look so easy, even if she is starting to approach her limit. But Soi Fong’s maneuver surprises her. There’s a slight yelp, but it’s more out of surprise than anything else, as Soi Fong manages to hold onto Yoruichi’s tail for a brief moment. As carefree Yoruichi is, being captured by the tail would just be far too indignant. Instead, she manages to wrest her tail free and keep running. They’re now entering into the second half of the thirty minute.

Soi Fong comes fully into view for a moment to rest down on one knee. Her body trembles from the gasps that tear painfully from her lungs. She winces as a droplet of sweat trails down into her eye, but Soi Fong refuses to close them against the sting of it. It doesn't sting nearly as bad as the suggestion that she's giving up. She's not giving up! Time is running out and Soi Fong knows it, but she's done so well, surprised even herself with how close she's come! "No." Another gasp for breath, but it's not considered wasted since Soi Fong can't let her words end there. "Yoruichi-sama!" Soi Fong forces herself up and forward, her hand reaching almost desperately for the cat.

It’s that final burst of speed that marks the difference between winner and loser. Yoruichi was completely not expecting that final move of desperation from Soi Fong and so hadn’t pushed herself to go that extra mile she normally would have. But then again, this is a game. The instant she feels her former bodyguard’s hand though, she knows it’s over. It’s only a heartbeat longer before she gets scooped up by the belly and lets out a surprised yorwl. Panting slightly, the cat turns her head to regard Soi Fong, "It looks like you win Soi Fong." Does she sound amused? Most likely.

It started out as a game, Soi Fong never forgot that. Maybe it's because she's just not used to playing games that it still impacts her so heavily. She couldn't have caught up with Yoruichi. It wasn't her fur that Soi Fong felt between her fingers. This is all a dream, but at least a good one. Little Bee kneels again, only this time on both knees as she catches her breath. Her eyes are focused forward, almost refusing to look down at the source of warmth in her arms. But she finally does look down, and her expression instantly starts to crumble under her emotions. "Yoruichi-sama!" Don't start crying! She's taking it too seriously, it was all in good fun! But it's impossible for anyone else to know what this means to Soi Fong. Not the wager, that's the furthest thing from her mind. But she proved herself again...maybe Soi Fong really is worthy of her.

Yoruichi shrugs casually as she manages to rotate herself in Soi Fong’s arms so that she’s facing her. Her eyes change shape, one narrowing while the other lifts upwards. It gives the impression of someone raising an eyebrow, but it’s a cat and cats have no eyebrows. Duh. Indeed, Soi Fong is taking all this entirely too seriously. This calls for drastic measures. She scrunches herself up a little, compacting her muscles in the same way she would for a pounce. Instead of pouncing though, she launches herself upwards a bit, gently headbutting Soi Fong in the nose, "Why are you upset? Did you not want to win? It’s only a game." Her words are gentle, mildly scolding.

Soi Fong blinks at the feline headbutt, her emotional meltdown averted thanks to it. Why no, those weren't tears in her eyes! It was sweat, just sweat! It was a tough chase for Soi Fong, and though she normally wouldn't believe in the existence of 'luck', she can't deny that it might've played a roll in how it all ended. "Of course, Yoruichi-sama." Soi Fong nods while placing the cat back down gently on the ground. She gets to her feet as well, but the time it takes her to do so and the little wobble is proof that she's close to exhaustion. "When should I deliver my request to you?" She can't keep from blushing softly, but not for any bad reasons. Really! It just seems...too good to be true. But if Yoruichi tells her she can't ask for anything for a century, Soi Fong will honor that without complaint.

Yoruich rolls her shoulders as she sits calmly on the cement, feeling the bones pop and the muscles stretch, "Whenever you wish Soi Fong." She still can’t believe she lost. Ah well. There will always be next time but she’s going to be drinking all of Urahara’s milk tonight that’s for sure. A knowing smirk crosses her face, "But perhaps you understand the importance of play now Soi Fong?"

Soi Fong exhales heavily when she's told she can deliver her request anytime she wants. Was it a sigh of relief though? She should be overjoyed! And she is -- that she won. But that it comes with the price tag of Yoruichi being some sort of servant for a day feels wrong and out of place. But she's not about to tarnish the wager by not coming up with something. Soi Fong looks momentarily surprised when the cat reminds her of how important it is to play and not just practice all the time. When she thinks back at the chase down alleyways and over fences, all that was just as fun as actually catching her. Maybe even moreso! "Yes Yoruichi-sama! I had fun!" And it's true! Though Soi Fong's definition of the word will probably always be slightly different from most. But even if she'd lost, Soi Fong would only think back on the lesson fondly. "Goodnight!" She bows her head forward abruptly, asking for permission to be dismissed.

"Good night Soi Fong. I look forward to what you come up with." Yoruichi smiles fondly as she takes her leave, wondering what sort of 'punishment' is in store for her.

PS: Both Soi Fong and myself need tags.
