I used a random number table for the order, since I sorta got three requests at roughly the same time. Thirty drabbles in all, ten under each cut, all done consecutively o.O
Kyumin requested by
fanmin. Kyuhae and Kimin requested by
merashun.
FIC MEME
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Put iTunes or equivalent media player on random.
3. For each song that plays, write something related to the theme you picked inspired by the song. You have only the time frame of the song: no planning beforehand: you start when it starts, and no lingering afterward; once the song is over, you stop writing. (No fair skipping songs either; you have to take what comes by chance!)
4. Do 10 of these, then post.
1. "Down" - Blink 182
Donghae is observant, though Kyuhyun does not know whether this is to or against his favor.
When Kyuhyun is happy, Donghae notices. And somehow, though words are never exchanged, the older man feels it's his obligation to make Kyuhyun even happier.
When Kyuhyun is down, Donghae notices. And still, Donghae feels obligated to make Kyuhyun happy.
"You look down," he'd tell Kyuhyun in a serious expression.
"Ah, no hyung, I'm not."
"Yes you are." And Kyuhyun knows there's no point in arguing, because it's the truth.
It occurs to Kyuhyun only when Donghae leaves just how much Kyuhyun had been relying on Donghae's attempts to cheer him up. Because when Donghae is not there, his happiness plummets, his sadness worsens.
2. "7 Years of Love" - Cho Kyuhyun (YES A LONG SONG!)
Donghae understands what the passage of time brings, but he doesn't quite understand the magnitude of just how much time could bring in one's absence.
It hadn't been his fault that he'd had to leave. His company had offered him a promotion, a step closer to his life's goal, a promotion he couldn't turn down.
But with it had come relocation.
"I'll come visit," Donghae had promised Kyuhyun, his lover at the time.
But he never did, because his job had swamped him. He couldn't even find the time to call Kyuhyun at the end of each day, as the moment he'd entered his apartment Donghae would collapse onto his bed.
He hadn't forgotten about Kyuhyun. He'd hoped Kyuhyun hadn't forgotten about him either. But after seven years of slaving for his company, Donghae realizes the truth.
His next promotion brings him closer to Kyuhyun, and so as his first apology he means to visit Kyuhyun. But the man, it seems, has moved.
His phone number, too, has changed.
It isn't only until a chance encounter on the streets when Donghae finally meets Kyuhyun once more.
"Kyuhyun... I missed you."
And Kyuhyun, with a grim expression on his face, turns to Donghae.
"Donghae... I'm engaged."
3. "Breaking My Heart" - Aqualung
Donghae is nice, perhaps too nice.
Sure, it had been on Donghae's account that their relationship was no more. But even still, the man takes it upon himself to make sure Kyuhyun's doing all right.
"Hyung," says Kyuhyun, "you tore my heart into pieces, and now you're offering to put it back together again?"
"I never meant to break your heart," Donghae replies quietly.
And though it isn't Donghae's intention, Kyuhyun feels as if his heart has been torn anew once more.
4. "Someone to Save You" - OneRepublic
Kyuhyun sits patiently and listens intently, even though he doesn't really register any of Donghae's verbal infomercials on dance routines and fish and aliens, as he really doesn't care for any of those topics except the former.
He does so in a way that does not insult Donghae, only nodding when required of an answer. He doesn't want to tell Donghae that he doesn't care about fish (as much as Donghae does) or aliens (except in the context of Starcraft), because he knows Donghae easily gets offended (albeit only in jest).
He gives Donghae exactly what he wants, and nothing more (unless it's to the man's favor). Because he's made Donghae truly upset with him once before. Because Kyuhyun doesn't want Donghae to leave.
Because Kyuhyun doesn't want to lose him.
5. "Falling Slowly" - Glen Hansard
Because Donghae had claimed they never went out as much as they used to, Kyuhyun finds himself on a boat headed to nowhere.
"You realize," begins Kyuhyun, "if you keep this up we'll never be able to find our way back home?"
Donghae shakes his head. "Nah, it's easy. Just follow the river upstream. Fish do it all the time."
"Well some of us aren't exactly fish," says Kyuhyun, and Donghae misses the subtle insinuation completely.
6. "Happiness" - Super Junior (M)
Because Donghae is bored, and because Donghae requires amusement when bored, Kyuhyun finds himself being asked to describe certain words.
"CD," says Donghae in English.
"A CD is a disc you put music on," replies Kyuhyun.
But Donghae only shakes his head. "No, CD!"
"...city?" and Donghae nods profusely. "Seoul."
"Fine," Donghae snaps, and he pauses to think of a harder word. "Happiness."
"Happiness?" asks Kyuhyun, and Donghae nods. "When someone is happy."
"Not good!" Donghae yells, and he demands Kyuhyun of a better answer.
Kyuhyun sighs, and then smiles. "Fine. Happiness. Us. Better?"
"Bus?" echoes Donghae. But Kyuhyun doesn't bother a second time, and settles with giving Donghae a Rubix's cube to solve.
"And don't peel the stickers!"
7. "Life of a Salesman" - Yellowcard
Kyuhyun is grim that day, because his mood tends to reflect that of the man always standing next to him.
But he's understanding this time around, much unlike the countless times Donghae's exuberance has pushed Kyuhyun to his limits. No, this time, Donghae's mood is understandable, and even without Donghae's influence Kyuhyun would have felt the same way.
"Dad..." Donghae whispers, and all Kyuhyun can offer is an encouraging pat on his shoulder.
That day marked three years after the day Donghae found out of his father's death. Kyuhyun doesn't understand the feeling because he himself has never lost a family member, and so he always feels that he can't console Donghae in the way he should.
"It's fine," Donghae would say. "Your love is enough."
Donghae gives Kyuhyun his mood, and Kyuhyun gives Donghae his love. And on that day, Kyuhyun thinks this system works well.
8. "Sorry Sorry Answer" - Super Junior
From one side of the bar, Kyuhyun stares intently at the man on the dance floor, and it eases him to know that he's not the only one staring.
The man, whom his neighbors claim to be Lee Donghae, has taken control of the dance floor. His body moves to the beat, his hips swaying in synchronization with the music, his feet matching the bass line as if Donghae himself had created the song.
Kyuhyun finds himself unable to tear his gaze away, because this man dances well. And he knows he's not supposed to find this Donghae of a stranger so appealing, so tantalizing. But he has; Kyuhyun is long past gone, blinded by physical attraction and Donghae's dance skills.
When the flashing lights reveal Donghae's sweaty face, hair slicked to one side, Kyuhyun seals the deal.
"I'm sorry," Kyuhyun whispers into the loud music.
He doesn't talk to Donghae that night, because Kyuhyun knows he'll see the man again.
9. "Beautiful" - Super Junior (Donghae)
"You're beautiful," Donghae says one day, though Kyuhyun doesn't believe him.
"Ya, Donghae, you've been saying that ever since you sang that song at Super Show."
"But it's true!" Donghae exclaims. "I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it!"
"Right, which is why you only say it when we're getting ready for a show, and makeup's covering half my face."
"Kyuhyun, that's not what I... you know what, fine, don't take my compliment. You're uglier than Heechul on a bad hair day, all right? -- and uglier than Heechul with Heebum-scratch-attack-marks on his--"
"You know what," Kyuhyun snaps, hitting Donghae upside the head; "I think I prefer beautiful."
"Thought so," says Donghae before thieving a kiss.
10. "Helena" - My Chemical Romance (this drabble has no relation to the song whatsoever, actually)
"English music sucks," Donghae says when he and Kyuhyun board the van back to their dorm. "Or maybe just English sucks. It sounds so choppy, even choppier than the Mandarin we have to sing."
"You just hate English because you can't say the words properly," Kyuhyun teases, earning a pout from Donghae.
"That's not true!" he whines. And then, putting on his straightest face: "Hi! I'm Aiden Lee! Nice to meet you!"
But Kyuhyun only yawns, though he loses the act halfway through and cracks a laugh. "Ya, I don't like Aiden Lee. Wake me up when Donghae comes back, all right?"
And though Donghae pesters Kyuhyun with "No, no, I am Lee Donghae!" in his supposedly best English, Kyuhyun refuses to acknowledge Donghae's English attempts.
(I like you better with broken English, anyway.)
1. "The Iron Sea" - Keane
Somewhere, beyond the seas and oceans, Sungmin is waiting for me. I know he's trying his best with his own activities, and I should do the same here in America.
Sungmin's talented in endless amounts of ways, but he's driven by inspiration. And that's why he's awaiting my return. Or at least, that's what he tells me on the phone. I'm pretty sure his talents are irrelevant to my presence.
Just come home, he says, whenever I point this out to him.
And I promise, Sungmin. When I finish my acting business here, I'll come back to everyone. To you.
2. "The Luckiest" - Ben Folds
At first Sungmin gets angry when Kibum doesn't answer his questions up front. He knows it's Kibum's personality, not that Kibum has a terrible sense of hearing, but sometimes his lack of patience gets the better of him.
But when Kibum says nothing to the question "Am I really that girlish?" Sungmin begins to worry. He doesn't know whether Kibum doesn't respond out of his habits or because Kibum doesn't want to upset Sungmin with his answer.
So Sungmin spends two days trying to find out. He spends the first being incredibly feminine, wearing aprons, an excessive amount of pink (though the difference compared to his normal attire is hard to see), and a rather female air in his actions. The second day, Sungmin doesn't even bother with the pink, and he dresses up much in the same way Kibum does.
But in the end Kibum only growls, managing "Quit it with the extremes and just be yourself" before leaving Sungmin to his own, embarrassed laughter.
3. "It's You//SORRY SORRY" - Sorea Group Cover (uhhhh wtf, a fic on this?)
"You know," Sungmin tells Kibum one day, "I'm feeling uninspired."
"Uninspired?"
Sungmin nods. "Yeah. Like, I can't find the motivation to do half the things I need to do."
"Oh... I see." Kibum frowns, turning his head away from the television. "Would you like me to inspire you?"
"You already do."
"But then, why do you need inspiration?"
"...never mind." And Kibum, who dismisses Sungmin's actions as merely attention-seeking, shrugs him off before turning to the television once more.
4. "Superman" - Lazlo Bane (aka Scrubs!)
Sungmin can't help but to laugh when Kibum walks out of the bathroom wearing a Superman outfit.
"It... suits you," Sungmin says approvingly, and Kibum only shrugs apathetically.
"We're too old for Halloween, you know."
"I know, but...." Sungmin giggles, in a manly way, of course. "...ah, fine, I just wanted to see you in a Superman outfit."
"...you could've just said that."
"Yeah, but...." Sungmin sighs, and in an attempt to insert humor, he adds: "Ah, save me, Superman!"
"I can't," Kibum replies monotonically. "You're my Kryptonite."
"Why am I your Kryptonite?" Sungmin asks, pouting. "You don't like being near me?"
And it's only then that Kibum breaks his apathy, and he smiles before hugging the other man close to him.
"No. Because you make me weak in the knees."
5. "I Don't Care" - Fall Out Boy
"Kibum," Sungmin whines, "Do I really not look good in pink?"
"..."
Sungmin sighs. "I mean, the other day I was talking to Kyuhyun, and he said that blue was a more suiting color for me."
"..."
"And I told him I didn't care what he thought, but the more I think about it the more I'm curious. I mean, I wear pink because I like it, but... I dunno. I never used to care, either, but because Kyuhyun said it--"
"Sungmin," Kibum interjects, and it silences Sungmin immediately. "I don't care."
"You... what?"
"I don't care," Kibum repeats. "As in, I like you when you wear pink, and I'd still like you if you wore blue."
"Oh... okay."
6. "Let's Not (Instrumental)" - Super Junior
"OMG KIBUM LOOK AREN'T THEY CUTE~!"
"...sure."
Sungmin blinks. "But, but, the bunnies!"
"...I see them."
"HOW ARE YOU NOT AFFECTED BY THEIR CUTENESS?!" Sungmin moves forward to pick one up. "Look, look! It's so cute, how it snuggles up to me, and.... Hey, Kibum, can we have one? Please?"
"...let's not."
7. "The Lover's Kiss" - Isisip
Two consciences of different thought collide. Kyuhyun calls it a moment of collision; Donghae refers to it as the aliens' doing. But nevertheless, the two men meet.
Kibum is of the silent nature, though he is quite expressive when he talks. Sungmin is of the open nature, though sometimes it's hard to see how he truly feels.
And they seem perfect for each other. Kyuhyun says it's because their collision is perfectly inelastic. Donghae says it's because of the alien's doing.
But when Kibum and Sungmin romance each other, when they kiss, when their consciences merge into one, their differences dissipate. And Kyuhyun and Donghae can't come up with reasons for that, except for the fact that, well, they were Kibum and Sungmin.
8. "IT'S" - KINYA
"I don't understand when people listen to foreign music," Sungmin tells Kibum after he makes him listen to some song called "Party in the USA" for the hell of it. "I mean, I guess if the song was nice and all, you could appreciate it for the musical aspect. But if you don't know what the words are saying... it's like saying congratulations at a funeral."
"I agree," Kibum says with a shrug. "That doesn't explain our ridiculous fanbase outside of Korea though."
"I'll never understand fangirls," Sungmin says, and they leave it at that.
9. "O, America!" - Celtic Woman
"Today is Independence Day in the United States," Kibum tells Sungmin informatively. "It's the day that a bunch of people rage over some king and declare independence."
"This reminds me of Han Geng and Lee Soo Man," Sungmin says bitterly, and Kibum frowns.
"Oh, sorry." A pause. "Ah, don't worry about that, no one there cares about that anyway. Most only celebrate it for the fireworks."
"Ooh, fireworks!"
Later, Kibum regrets sharing his (brief) knowledge of American History with Sungmin, because the overabundance of fireworks have now permanently dented his wallet.
10. "We Might As Well Be Strangers" - Keane
Kibum shuts his eyes, because the words are still close to home.
"I don't know you anymore."
And had it been his fault?--he'd been in America, attending to personal matters with his family. And sure, maybe he'd overshot his estimated time in America a little, and sure, maybe he'd forgotten to keep in touch with Sungmin. Yet....
I didn't stop thinking about you. Sungmin, please.
"We might as well be strangers, Kibum."
Kibum doesn't know where Sungmin had left his old self behind, but he figures it's probably where the cure to his broken heart is hiding, too.
1. "Who Am I" - Super Junior (Siwon feat. Kyuhyun)
When Sungmin asks Kyuhyun "Who am I?" Kyuhyun calculates the many responses he can give.
He could say "I don't know," just to tease him.
He could say "Lee Sungmin," just because it's the most obvious response.
He could say "The most talented person in the world," just because it's nothing more than the truth.
He could say "A blob of pink," just because it's the most accurate visual description.
But instead, he says "My (adorable) boyfriend," because it's what sounds best to him.
And since it sates Sungmin's question, why not?
2. "Loop" - Sakamato Maaya
When a teenaged Sungmin kisses Kyuhyun in the back alleys of their school, Kyuhyun gasps in surprise.
"My dad said I couldn't see girls until I entered university, but he didn't say anything about seeing other guys."
"But why me?" Kyuhyun asks, because if the same gender had not thrown Kyuhyun in for a loop then their age difference certainly did.
"Because I like you. Why else?"
-
Later, in the middle of a park, Kyuhyun decides to return the favor.
"My mother used to say that kissing girls gave me cooties, but she never said that guys were contagious," Kyuhyun tells Sungmin, and the latter rolls his eyes.
"And you're sixteen, right?"
3. "The World We Live In" - The Killers
Sungmin likes the sight of the sunset at the beach, because the warm sand gives a nice feeling that accurately matches the glowing yet fading sun. Kyuhyun prefers the view over the cliff, because the stretching seas remind him of the vastness of the world beyond his own.
Sungmin likes the sunset best when his hand is entwined in Kyuhyun's, because it makes the imminent dark less frightening. Kyuhyun likes the view of the sea best when Sungmin's head is on his shoulder, but he really doesn't have a reason for it.
Sometimes Kyuhyun remembers that the beach and the cliff are both of the same world, the world they both live in. Other times he sees it as an indicator of their difference personalities and preferences.
4. "Bedshaped" - Keane
The empty bed next to Sungmin is a painful absence, because it's not empty at all. Beside him, the bed is still indented, a reminder that Kyuhyun had once been there next to him.
Once been, as in he no longer was.
5. "Handlebars" - Flobots
At the beginning, he kept the training wheels on their relationship, because everything was still so new. Kyuhyun was scared for everything to fall apart; he was scared to steer off the road to the point of disrepair.
When time passed, when hands began to hold each other, when kisses left his imagination, when love was no longer a child's word, Kyuhyun took the training wheels off. But there was still guardedness, a fear of losing what felt right to him. And though he was sure Sungmin would never leave him, that it was impossible to drive off the side of the road, Kyuhyun kept his watch.
It was only when more time passed, when hands began to explore other body parts, where kisses were no longer only for the lips, when love could no longer be expressed by a mere "I love you," that Kyuhyun took his first ride hands-free, with no handlebars.
And then, he felt most free.
6. "There Was No Thief" - Relient K
"Did you steal my underwear?"
"Why would I do that? Did you ask Henry?--he's stolen Han Geng's, I wouldn't be surprised if he stole--"
"You have my underwear, Kyuhyun."
"...what? Why would I do that?"
"Because that one time, when were having sex, you said it'd be sexy if I--"
"I didn't mean it! I swear, I don't have your underwear!"
"Kyuhyun, I know you--wait, Hyaku... why's my underwear...?"
"See, Hyaku had it the entire time!"
"... I bet you fed it, didn't you."
"Just admit there was no thief and let me return to my StarCraft, kthnx?"
7. "Rokkugoh" - Super Junior T
It's a little silly at first, when Sungmin comes running to Kyuhyun to whine about their first single in Super Junior Trot. Kyuhyun knows he's kidding, because he's quite sure Sungmin's aware of the nature of the song.
But when Sungmin buys a watermelon just to prove to Kyuhyun that watermelons, believe it or not, actually cannot clap, Kyuhyun reconsiders his claim.
8. "Cemetery" - Say Anything
"Here?" Kyuhyun asks Sungmin, pointing at an empty spot on the ground, and Sungmin nods.
With a twig, Sungmin writes largely: "This spot is reserved for Lee Sungmin and Cho Kyuyun."
"You know," Kyuhyun begins slyly, "only the ants are bugs are going to acknowledge this spot."
But Sungmin only shrugs. "To be honest, when I'm ninety-five with Alzheimer's, I'll probably forget I've reserved this spot for the two of us. What counts is that we're buried together."
"And when you're ninety-five with Alzheimer's, you won't forget about me either"
"Of course not, I could never forget you, Kyuhyun."
9. "For the Band" - Relient K
"Hypothetically speaking," begins Sungmin, "if you had to love me for the sake of the band, would you?"
"As in love love?" Kyuhyun asks, and he shrugs. "I suppose. But I don't understand the question. Shouldn't it be like, Would you love me if it weren't for the sake of the band, or something like that?"
"Why?"
"Well because if it were an obligation, then of course I would. Whereas in my question, you're asking if I would do it if I weren't obligated."
"...I'm never asking you another hypothetical question. Ever. Again."
"Love you too," Kyuhyun replies cheekily, but Sungmin pretends not to hear him.
10. "Paper Thin Hymn" - Anberlin (unrelated resulting fic is unrelated)
Siwon tells Sungmin that his relationship with Kyuhyun isn't exactly a one-way ticket to heaven, and though Siwon also tells him that he thinks nothing less of Sungmin the latter still tells Siwon to bugger off.
When he complains to Kyuhyun, the last answer he expects is "It's not because he's overly religious or anything. He's just jealous you're mine and not his."
When Kyuhyun gives this (crack) explanation to Sungmin, the last action he expects him to take is for Sungmin to go verifying this with Siwon himself. And the punishments he receives from both Siwon and Sungmin, in whatever pathetic forms they happen to come in, last for weeks and weeks.
And while Kyuhyun is slightly bitter of Siwon's "punishments," which consist of sermons he could just walk into a church to hear, he rather enjoys Sungmin's.
Total word count: 3611
...and that's a wrap. Phew, thirty straight drabbles. My mind's blown (can you tell by the later fics? XD). Thanks for reading (and commenting?) XD
