Fic and film rec: My Dearly Beloved Detective

Fic rec! This year for holmestice I got something I was very much hoping for but not really expecting, a fic based on the film "My Dearly Beloved Detective", which is a rather obscure Russian adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. The fic is my tired soul on fire by an anonymous author. It's femslash, I loved it, and I highly recommend it ( Read more... )

Just seconding your recs ^_^ I'd read your gift fic and the first MDBD fic The Hue and Cry before actually looking at the film. And I was slightly taken aback to find out it was a comedy, even though it ends on a deeply poignant note. Unsurprisingly, the comedic aspects appeal to me greatly as well. I love the singing and dancing policemen - very G & S.

Yes, I do love the singing and dancing policemen! Lester and his sergeant are hilarious at times too.

Funny how it seems to bring out the angst in writers, though. (Now that reveals are up I can admit the first MDBD fic was by me :) )

I suppose it's a bit of tragi-comedy, really. Think of the stories of the toreador, or the over-the-top fake-Corsican and her husband, for instance.

Anyway, certainly one of my very favourite Holmes adaptations! Nice to hear you like it too :)

I greatly enjoyed all three MDBD stories, and was greatly amused (but not at all surprised) that all three authors went straight to the angst place. (There is a delicious angsty underbelly to that film, for those who enjoy such things.)

But clearly the film also cries out for an author with a proven talent for farce. Perhaps such an author will appear and grace us with an MDBD fic next round? We can only hope.

Speaking of obscure adaptations of Sherlock Holmes that people may not know about...! Friends and I have put together an AO3 collection with the hopes of making it easier for authors and audiences in these smaller fandoms to find each other. We especially hope it'll be helpful for things like MDBD, where the AO3 tag is new, and thus people might not yet know it exists.

We're only just starting to get the word out, but we'd be very pleased if you wished to include your MDBD and GMD stories (and anything else you may create for a smaller Holmesian fandom, of course!) in the More Holmes collection. :-)

What a great idea! Many thanks to you and the others for setting it up. Just glancing through the collection now, I saw lots of fandoms I wanted to read fic for, but never found till now... I'll definitely add current and future "obscure Holmes" fic.

Oh, excellent, I'm glad you like! I think it will be most useful as people make new things, when the collection will make it easier to discover that there's a new work in this obscure fandom here and another in that fandom way over there, without everyone having to manually check every single AO3 tag -- including ones that don't exist yet! -- just in case.

But in the meanwhile, have a complete list of all the Holmesian AO3 tags that currently exist: sub-tags of Sherlock Holmes and Related Fandoms. Because I daresay that we'll never manage to collect more than a fraction of what's already been published. :-)
