[Breezes in from the kitchen, carrying another plate of peach buns, and humming along with the Xingese music. Her dress is bright blue with a butterfly motif in a slightly darker blue, hair caught up in a slightly disheveled chignon.]

[her eyes light up]

Polly, thank you again for helping make the food! And making our dresses. It saved me so much money...!

You're welcome! I've never made anything quite like them before! It was fun!

When should we do the fireworks?

Yes. We have to set off firecrackers outside the front door for good luck. This is one of the most important things to do on New Year.

Why is it so important?

[Not that she's complaining, mind. She'd practically wiggling with anticipation, having wanted to see real fireworks since she first heard about them.]

Ah. The loud noise is said to scare away evil spirits. The things we do for New Year's are mostly either for chasing out the old spirits and bad luck of the old year, and having good luck in the new year.

Like these! [she shows Polly a peach bun]

Oh, I see! [Accepts the peach bun and takes a bite.] So, peaches are good luck?

We have a fairy tale about a fairyland with magical peaches. In the stories, if you ate one of these peaches, you would live forever.

So these buns are shaped like a peach, and we eat them for a long life. They have sweet bean jam in them for a sweet life.

[Eyes wide. She is now going to make absolutely certain that all of her friends eat one.]

Here, Ran Fan, you should have one, then!

[oops, how to explain superstitions....]

Ah-- Polly? They do not actually give you a long life. It is more like, a wish. Or a nice thought. Like, if I like you, and I want you to know that I want you to live happy, I give you one. See?

[but she wolfs it down anyway and gives Polly a shy smile]
