Back where I'm from, parents would tell their little ponies stories about rainbow drinkers-evil monsters who grew stronger by taking away other ponies' happiness and magic. It... seemed like it would fit into my story, when I found out what "gothic" meant.

You mean the parents? It was mostly to keep ponies from misbehaving. They'd say things like, "Go to sleep, or else the rainbow drinkers will get you!" It's pretty effective, especially when they're young.
