[He's not responding with text. This requires a more direct confrontation.

Because seriously, did you have to add the part about the solar system in there. Never mind everything else.]

John.

[;akldjsf those keywords. Don't you play spectacularly ignorant with me.]

A wonderful promotion for me. Truly stunning. I do have a problem with one of the sentences though.

[But it's meant in a nice way?]

Oh? Which one?

There are two of Grandfather running around?

... Sorry, did you say 'Grandfather'?

Yes.

Are there really two of him?

If you're talking about Sherlock Holmes, then yes, there are two people by that name.

[Completely unimpressed:]

'The taller one'?

Well, how else am I supposed to indicate which one I'm talking about?

I suppose I could have used a photograph...

Re: [video] yes_mother_hen February 3 2011, 03:23:50 UTC
A myriad of ways, John, all of them more obvious than the next. 'The modern one'. 'The Sherlock Holmes hailing from the 21st century'. 'The non-Victorian one'. Shall I go on?

Re: [video] holmes_blogger February 3 2011, 03:34:52 UTC
Yes, but those require context that not everyone has. 'Modern' is relative. 'Victorian' is lost on anyone who doesn't have the slightest idea who Queen Victoria was. And the century doesn't help if someone doesn't know which century the other Sherlock Holmes is from. For all they know, you could be from the 21st century and Sherlock from the 23rd.

'Taller' is obvious.

Did you lose a bet or something?

Yes, I lost a bet. It's all true though.

I've read some of the stories. I know.

But what's with the planets thing? Sounds like a random thing to put into a message like this.

Ah, that. It's just a little inside joke about certain gaps in his seemingly all-encompassing knowledge.

I- I think you did very well, John. It's a very good letter. [...Does he want to ask about the planet thing? Maybe not now.]

[After a long hesitation, he filters to private and frowns seriously.]

But Sherlock really shouldn't nit-pick at it so badly. You'd asked for a change from math and chemistry questions, but he still gave you math...

[Righteous indignation, he has it. Never mind it's weak way late.]

Ah, I didn't realize anyone had followed that discussion. [John just shrugs.] It's all right. Once he pointed out the pattern it was obvious. I should have been able to figure it out.

[*blush* Yah, he wanted to see how his friend was doing against Sherlock's challenge, and it just built from there...]

Anything is obvious once you have the answer. It was really hard.
[No, he hadn't lost sleep trying to figure it out. Really.]
But, if you say it's all right...

It's Sherlock. That's just how he is. [It's meant to sound resigned, but it's said with a smile.]

And it was worth the risk for the slim chance at making him clean the room.
